Got a Barr note at a bar!

Postby AGgressive Metal » Fri Jan 21, 2011 1:46 am

I got a 1963 B Richmond Barr note in change at a bar. Ridiculous! Its maybe XF. No idea how this still happens in 2011, but I'll take it! Most likely some idiot taking notes from daddy's collection.

Joseph Barr was only Treasury Secretary for 28 days, for those not "in the know". In other words, its not very common to find a note that he signed!

I always saved the Barr notes, too. However, I just looked up Joseph Barr's entry on Wikipedia and it said the following:

United States paper money always depicts the signature of the Secretary of the Treasury; because of Barr's short term, collectors speculated notes bearing his signature would be scarce. A common misconception is that currency bearing Barr's name is rare. In reality, 458,880,000 $1.00 notes were printed bearing his signature (although none in other denominations), but due to the $1.00's limited lifespan (they only last an average of 21 months in circulation)[2] it is unknown how many still exist.

Go figure.
