Sure, they only contain about 5 cents worth of metal that you have to pay $1.32 each to get... But they sold out. Native american 2013 also down to the rolls (no bags or boxes left) Its quite rare for a circulation coin to "sellout" at mint pricing.

Truth be known, you can slip one into a Canadian loonie roll and only get slightly weird looks

At almost every bank branch I go to, they are sitting on $500+ and in some cases over $1000+ worth of the "Gold Dollars". They still can't give them away as no one wants them. They ask me just about every time.

My theory is that collecting comes in cycles for the masses. Interest goes up, interest goes down. Also, I have a thought that the mint knows these things are silly and perhaps they are producing less of them.

My guess (theory) is that we are on an upcycle of the common man striking an interest in coins. The slightly increased demand coupled with lower production levels could have led to the sellout. As soon as we start the downward cycle of the coin collections for the masses (When everyone realizes that they are essentially worthless beyond FV) they will all be turned into their local bank branches to sit un-loved in a vault for years.

The rollout was 340 million Washington coins, so I can imagine that the first one had zero collectability (one for every person in the US) especially considering that every quarter already has a nice profile of him anyhow. There was no need to sort through Washington dollars in 2007

Starting with Woodrow Wilson, there are octegenarians out there who might be a niche market "Why didn't XX president ever have their face on a coin?" That and they have reduced the mintages to under 10 million for each president (1 in every 40 US citizens makes it potentially collectable) Although I can imagine that sorting through and throwing back 40 Washingtons for every later president might discourage even the most dedicated hoarder.

Keeping a few AU or UNC presidential dollars with date 2012 or later might start to become a hobby for some, or maybe not. Psychology of money is a strange thing, but I never disliked the design - all that much.

I guess its a matter of perspective.

In Canada, we like the loonies. Banks maintain floats of loonies at a very respectable level. Its pretty hard to ask for more than $3,000 in cdn bills - but there is more than a good chance you can ask for $1,000 in loonies without *too* much difficulty. The bill cash is suprisingly difficult to get, and even the largest branches will make you "order" bills and wait a few days, if you want more than a few thousand $. Having a few thousand dollars in dollar coins in Canada is "normal".

Noone ever "coin roll hunts" $1,000 boxes of loonies - Its just too expensive, and you will never get a loonie older than 1987. At most, I've heard of people picking up a roll or two to look for a lucky loonie. There was zero collectability of loonies until 2002 (15 years after introduction)

I've heard its fairly easy to ask for as many $100 bills as you want in the US, you don't even have to "pre-order" them.

While I see lots of US quarters, dimes and nickels I have never seen a Pres $ in Canada circulating. I think they would be refused at every till in the country - no one has ever seen one. If they actually circulated in Canada I would consider coin roll hunting them out of circulation just for the exchange dif but no point.

I have no issues getting up to $5000 in bills from banks and CUs. Never thought of moving cash in toonie and loonie boxes, but ya they always have those on hand.

If you want to move into large denomination coinage, you can always go with the Calgary 1988 olympic $20 coins.

They are 33.6 grams of sterling (.925) silver, or one troy ounce of silver by weight. Its almost a 1:1 face value ratio, one of the rare few silver coins that is labelled that high.

Being in Calgary right now, you can get as many as you want, for spot + small premium + GST. Since its not .999 silver, there is GST - which is a drawback. Bill cash seems to be very stretched thin around here.

I believe they did that to they SBAs so these would be the only ones in use... Although I've gotten SBAs at the bank in the last year.

spent an SBA at the bar tonight.... 1980.... thought that was cool... I alwas get 79s in change... I was thinking about saving it.... but decided to return it into the wild.... you get dollar coins in change here often from vending machines.. parking ect.... never got one in a transaction.

It's my understanding there are over a billion Sacagawea $1 coins in circulation in Ecuador and they are considered the coin of the realm. Try passing a dead president or a Susan B. and it likely will not be accepted. Again, as I have read and understand.

Perhaps Panama is looking for dead presidents to circulate?

then no coins made at all till 1999

No dollar coins will be released into circulation in 2012 as in past years. Since so many of the coins now sit unused in Federal Reserve vaults, Treasury Secretary Geithner suspended their production for circulation, allowing the U.S. Mint to produce them only for collectors.
