thanks for doing these threads Country. Will be back on the silver tracking thread soon.

Thanks....

The Copper Tracking threads are easy for me to do. I've got them pretty much automated. The Half Dollar SILVER thread is the one that takes me a few hours to update. I only do the updates for that one once a week.

I was in the right place at the right time. Picked up $102 in CWRs from a local coin shop...someone had come in and used them to make a purchase. The owner was just going to take them to the bank to cash in so I offered to buy them all which I did. Took 4 days to hand sort and turned out to be a Cu bonanza.

Re: Copper Penny Handsorter Tracking

Postby Jackson » Thu Sep 23, 2010 3:58 pm

Hello guys. I am new to this website as I found it checking spot prices on Kitco. This is very exciting news for me. I have been hand sorting copper penny's for the past three years. (140,500+ coppers rolled and boxed in my basement, to inculde a full box of wheat ears.)

My wife and friends have been calling me a nut for this hobby of mine, so I can't emphasize enough how fun it is for me to find this site with fellow penny hoarders. I think the idea is a smart one and have even considered finding a mechanical sorter and starting a business like the Portland Mint (another site I found on kitco last week.) However i am simply too busy with evrything else to really start that type of operation.

Great to find you guys but I was having a few problems figuring out your abbreviations. Also, what exactly do you consider an 'ugly abe'. I have been rolling all of my copper's 1959-1981 in the same paper roll regardless of condition. Am I making a mistake by doing so?

Please fill me in,

Thanks,

Jackson

Sorry for my ignorance, but please fill me in on the following ;
CRW ?
BWR ?
CU ?
ACE Checked ?
LP1 ?
LP2 ?
LP3 ?
LP4 ?

Also, what do you guys consider as "ugly Abes" and have I been making a mistake by rolling all of my 1959-1982 (copper 1982 only) together?

Thanks for the input. :D

WELCOME!!! :)

CWR - Customer Wrapped Roll - paper rolls customers cash in at the bank; known to have a high percentage of coppers and wheats. :mrgreen:
BWR - Bank Wrapped Roll - paper rolls/plastic rolls that are in the bank provider's $25 boxes
CU - Copper pennies; usually noted that way to denote 1959-1982 coppers, separate from the wheats
ACE Checked - The Rydale ACE is a hand feeding machine that sorts pennies into two cups; coppers on the right and zincs on the left. Running 1982s through this machine to double-check copper 1982s from zinc 1982s is far easier than weighing each of them. I use the Ryedale ACE (available for $109 shipped) to hand sort all my pennies as I am watching TV. :D
LP1 - 2009 Lincoln Penny; design featuring Lincoln log cabin on reverse
LP2 - 2009 Lincoln Penny; design featuring Lincoln formative years, Lincoln as a log splitter on the reverse
LP3 - 2009 Lincoln Penny; design featuring Lincoln as a lawyer/politician on the reverse
LP4 - 2009 Lincoln Penny; design featuring the Capitol on the reverse, commemorating Lincoln as the President

http://2009lincolnpennies.com/

Ugly Abes - I keep these, but roll them separately apart from the clean coppers. An Ugly Abe is the green-crusty coppers with corrosion, damaged/scratched/bent coppers, coppers with a disgusting patina, coppers that are green in some way, coppers that are dark, etc. It's sort of subjective, but these coppers are the bad boys. ;)

I paper roll separately the Ugly Abes, Clean Coppers, 1982s, and Wheats. When I get 50 rolls of any of these, I put each category in a $25 box and seal it for storage. Some folks don't go this far because it is time consuming, but I like to keep everything separate; especially the Ugly Abes which can have a bad influence on my good coppers over time.... :)

I'll give it a shot--
CRW= customer wrapped rolls
BRW+ Brinks or Bank wrapped rolls (could be either, I guess)
CU = copper
ACE checked= I assume someone uses a Ryedale Ace sorter to sort out the 82 zinc from the 82 copper.
LP1- LP4 = the 4 different series of cents issued in 2009.
As far as "ugly Abes" I'll let someone else answer. I too wrap all my copper together ugly or not.

$25 Brink's Box
481 Copper non-wheats (19.2%)
- 398 Nice coppers
- 40 Ugly Abes
- 43 1982's (ACE checked)
6 Wheats - 1919, 1928, and 6 others
1 Canadian copper - '83

My copper percentage seems to going down. First time under 20% copper. The boxes I got in July produced 24+%. Lately, it's down around 20%. As times passes, I know there will be a diminishing supply of copper. :cry:

CU (both Capital letters = Credit Union)
Cu (Capital "C" and lower case "u" = Copper Memorial Pennies...Cu is the chemical element symbol in the Periodic Table for Copper.)

I store them unrolled in 10 pound Walmart Donut frosting buckets. I have 82 pounds currently and am working on 4 boxes a week. My best find so far is a 2009 ( double thumb) CDDR-002 MS 64 that is now in it's ICG slab. Kind of overkill on the getting slabbed but, is my first cool find. Maybe my someday grandkids will enjoy it.
I would like to sell my wheats but don't know how yet.

A digital scale is fine. That's what I used before I got my Ryedale ACE (a handsorter's gift from the Copper gods!!) :)
