Living poor means using what cash you make stretch as far as you can. Wife worked chasing cattle and helping with a fellows horses for the past 3 years[she got paid a cash wage but probably woulda done it for free ] and this year she got new transportation from him in the form of a 3 year old. Molly is quite a horse I must say[I dislike horses] and is super friendly to boot.


Then we figure out how to enjoy the sights that are good looking for free.

No room up here for more folks I'm afraid. We take a few for a holiday now and then.
Went out after picking up the spuds with about a half hour of daylight left and shot two coyotes to see how their hides are coming along. Got a large male a mile East of the house that made the wife .
If things go well with the season I hope to make a few bucks on them.

Just finished butchering the last of the meat chickens. 11lb was the biggest and 9lb the lightest. We now have enough in the freezer for a chicken dinner every Sunday or miss a week or two and trade for other goodies. While plucking the phone rang and a fellow on the other end wanted to know if I wanted an old, small, New Holland mixer mill. Said it has been inside since new and probably hasn't done a 1,000 bushels of grain. I told him to make the deal and phone me where to pick it up.LOL

those would last me about 3 days..........I juice about 15 lbs a day of carrots......fresh carrot juice is unbeatable!!!

it is a juice & puree machine, basically separates all the juice from the pulp, which comes it to a nearly dry powder....

I refrigerate the carrots first, I get them really cold so as to preserve the vitamins as they get heated up during the juicing process......(I find if they are really cold when they go in the juicer, and really cold juice when they come out, that it didnt heat up enough to where I lose any nutrients) then juice maybe 3-4 lbs. at a time, and then mix the carrot juice with distilled water 3 parts carrot juice to 1 part water, and drink it down fast.........about 5 lbs of carrots produce about 1 liter of juice. I do this about 3-4 times every day. I usually just compost the carrot powder, but once in awhile I will use it as a filler for a recipe, or bread, or mix it into a salad, or give it to the dogs, or just freeze it for later.

Yesterday I was with an old buddy who had never called coyotes so we sat looking down a couple lines that looked like this


Buddy wouldn't be quiet but a nice female came out 100 yds away and with a snap shot she looked like


Because of shooting a couple inch's high due to snap shooting I blew a hole in the hide I didn't want to deal with so I took her over to the Hutterites and traded her for 10 snares with the Seneker lock on them.
Buddy has a call now too.

Being able to shift gears in a hurry helps with living poor and provides a decent meal too. The old .410 has fed us many times over the years.

Letting the land provide food has always been part of my life. This morning I got to take my youngest[14] out looking for an antlerless moose. We first hear two bulls scrapping about 1/2 a mile away and they were fair sized. Then we saw this guy.


Shortly afterwards the lad did this with a two year old dry cow.




Neighbor I had been baby sitting cows for the past ten days picked a good time to show up.

Came up with another way of saving money this morning by accident. A few years ago a tannery about 70 miles East of me got a new owner and I was invited to meet the people by the old boss. I've been there several times as I like the process and learning never has done me no harm.
Several people have asked about tanning and I send them to Maverick and when I called them this morning about a guy who wants 12 buffalo hides done, the owner says to me he'll do my boys moose hide for free just cause I am one of his best advertisements. I don't mind saving my kid $300 so am quite happy.

Oldest lad came home last night cause he wanted meat in his freezer.


Being lazy I went and stole a tractor from the guy who owns the land where the moose lay.


Then the landowner shows up.


He told Tevis he expects two moose roasts.

Same crew got her skinned, gutted and cleaned in 33 minutes. Total elapsed time from leaving to hunt to done was 1 hour 43 minutes.

The other lad got sick of helping butcher and went out this afternoon and got a little WT buck before dark. The two lads are out cleaning it now.

You never know where you are gonna find your next bit of cash. I posted up some turkeys for sale live on a site and said I would be butchering the remaining birds. I got 3 messages asking for the wing feathers for fletching arrows. Not knowing what a feather would be worth I asked each one and how many they wanted. One guy answered $.50 a feather and he would like a hundred. The birds were being sold for $50 each and I ended the sale as If I butcher them and save the feathers it will be like selling 2 more dead ones which I can sell all day long. I never really understood how lazy people really were until I started selling things to guys with a little sweat equity involved. I hold little hope for these people if SHTF ever happens.

Wife has been cooking for our local Christmas farmers market[I think they have like 11 vendors] and it makes my life hard.
Butter tarts[she makes me a few dozen with homemade pastry]


Unbaked cookies that she makes too well.


Ginger snaps that snap.


Puffed wheat cake that got the lads in doo doo.


Poppy seed and chiffon cakes by the dozen.


Even had time to do up some beef for supper[like we needed that. ]


Desert was Butterscotch pudding made with whole milk from the cow.

The house smells so good it's tough to go out and do anything worthwhile. Had an extra eleven year old over for the day/night as he didn't wanna go do something boring in the city and I had to chuckle when he said, "It's no wonder Donny looks like a dang tall tree and if mom calls tell her I ran away so I can live here". Young fella knows what to say to get extra desert.
