May be going up to Canada. A few questions.

I may be going into Canada later this fall from the NH side. I plan to stop in a TD Bank there and pick up nickels. In terms of crossing the border, is it still allowed to bring Canadian money back into the USA? Also, I basically am nerdish enough to tell the border guards that my reason for visiting Canada is to go to TD Bank to do some business. Will they bother me with questions about that, given that my time in Canada will be brief and may be a recurring trip if it goes well the first time?

I like hiking up in the NH White Mountains and figure I can do a side trip into Canada on a hiking trip if it not a hassle.

You are allowed to bring as much CAD money back into the USA as you wish. If you bring over $10k then you must declare it. The more you bring the more questions they will ask.

While I never discourage hand/roll sorting I might pose a few questions for consideration.
1. Will the time and gas spent be worthwhile? How about the tolls? Do you have an account with TD bank? How will you dispose of the skunks? They have coin counters in grocery store at a fee.
Lastly with the alloy recovery program do you think the dollar amount you may be able to get will be worth all the trouble?

Do not forget to call the branch ahead of time. In my region (Québec), they do not give boxes of coins (any type).

Expect 5% of pre-1982 nickels.

You will need a valid passport. Not sure about the currency restrictions or the restrictions on individual coins.

Oh yeah, you'll also need to get vaccinated for "hockey fever".

As mentioned, you can bring in up to 10k face value without having to declare it, but you will probably blow your shocks out first.

TD branches are the least likely of any financial institution in Canada to hold any meaningful amount of coin on hand. CIBC is a close second, and their the tellers manage their own coin at each station. RBC is a lot better for coin.
