Variety Hunting Small Dollars pt.2

Postby JobIII » Sun Oct 09, 2016 9:24 pm

So this weekend I went back to the bank for more small dollars and they had 2 boxes waiting for me. I was going after the SBA wide rim variety & the mule 2000 P Sacagawea coin (I know Hail Mary coin, but what ever). Spoiler no $40,000 coin found today. Still I was surprised to see so many 1979 P wide rim varieties. I'm starting to wonder just how scarce this variety actually is.

Happy Hunting!!!

Nice video. Thanks for sharing. Are there any other small dollar coins that you consider worth keeping besides the varieties and the proofs? Are there NIFC coins or key dates that turn up?

Junius, are you looking for the Cheerio Dollar variety? I would say that it would be still 2-500 bucks even in Circ condition.

I thought the Cheerio Dollar Variety only counts if it's still in the packaging?

What % of the coins were SBA's? I would think more Presidential ones overall... in a box.

Its a real and noticeable die variation. Check out the center feather in my provided picture below. See the difference in "Tail Detail"

Now get out there and find me one!

Thanks took all Sunday!

Okay so the tail feathers but really it just looks like a great strike versus run of the mill strikes. But okay I'll go through a couple more boxes and go for the Cheerios!

Happy Hunting!!

Look for the 2000-P "Wounded Eagle" Sacagawea Dollar is so-named because of a raised die flaw that cuts across the eagle's belly (see the attribution image above). As of January 2012, this variety remains elusive, with PCGS showing a population of 115 examples in all grades. As more collectors examine their coins, the population may rise, or this could turn out to be a very scarce variety. Time will tell.

The vast majority of the known examples are Mint State, usually in MS-64 to MS-66. The finest examples are five PCGS MS67s.
