1) Watch the 13-minute video you can see by typing "Kyle MacDonald red paperclip" (yes, another Kyle- not Bass). This shows a guy who started with just a paperclip and after 14 trades maneuvered into getting a free house. (very inspirational and true)
2) Get a copy (used) of the book "The Big Silver Melt" (by Henry A. Merton). It is out of print, but a true story and fascinating. Nate at CopperCave.com (who uses this site) might have some copies and be willing to sell one to you.

Hi Mr. Steve,
I ordered the book on Barnes & Noble's website last night. It cost me about $21 with shipping and sales tax. I could have bought a nice ounce of silver with that money but I trust your judgment on the value of the book. This morning I watched Kyle's video on Youtube. Part of his secret seems to be having a website, not just Craigslist, to advertise his trading journey. Still, it was very instructive. Thanks for the tip. I need to incorporate his ideas into my outlook on life.

Insulated wire is unbelievable lately same with electric motors. #2 insulated wire was always easy money. now based on recovery %, I miss the days of $1 a pound and could have the ends on it as well!

Yesterday I turned in 205 lbs. of steel and got a "whopping" 8 bucks (down to 4 cents/lb.).

Normally, I'd put other more valuable things in the SUV) with the steel, but I was in a hurry this time as I had other reasons to be in the same area. Also, my wife is on me to thin out the amount of scrap in the backyard, so the steel was a good quick way to make a dent and show some progress.

We'll see about the price drop. The Trump Administration is apparently redoing the NAFTA deal with Mexico and the stock market liked the news a lot. This is seen as a precursor to additional moves ahead for Canada and even potentially China. If the China thing gets cleared up, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if metals really took off. And I fully expect an about face for metals prices (IMHO) over the next 2-6months.

I don't know how to answer that question for you as there are a number of factors. How badly do you need the money? Do you have a spouse or neighbor getting on your case to get things cleaned up? If your health situation isn't the best, do you have someone who would step up in your place (if you were unavailable) to convert the metals to cash?

All that said, I personally expect that copper will go back to $3 or higher in the next 2-6 months (from $2.73 now). Think about it this way. We had nice runs on a number of base metals where they hit, say, 3-5 year highs in the past 2-4 months or so. This applied to copper, nickel, aluminum and zinc. I remember a stock trader that I knew back in the day saying one of the safest times to buy a stock was on a pullback after a breakout. Isn't that exactly what we've gotten here? I know you could always argue that stocks are different from commodities, but charts showing the price activity for both show patterns that many choose to trade on. In this case, it is the pullback after a breakout. I can give you an example of a stock that recently did this and it is Advanced Micro Devices (Ticker: AMD).

In early 2017 AMD hit $15+ for the first time in over a decade. This was definitely a major breakout. By May it went down to around $10 a share, even though nothing was really wrong with the stock. It went back up to $15ish over the next couple months or so and then back down to $10ish again. Twice! It went to $10ish (even a bit below) in December of last year and again in April of this year.
Finally in June the stock broke decisively above $15 to a new high, yet still not anywhere close to the all-time high. In June it his $17+ before pulling back to $15ish in early July. That was a gift of a buying opportunity for anyone who follows this stock closely. Today it closed at $25.26, up another 5%. I'm not saying to buy the stock at this point, but this is a great example of what buying a strong performer after a pullback can do.

Also, a note of caution. I am definitely not a believer in buying something just once. I think that those who can take modest initial positions (rather than going all in with everything they've got) stand a much better chance of doing well over time.

This is a roundabout way of saying that I am still bullish on copper (and frankly nickel too). Silver will some day have its day in the sun, but silver is something that can do poorly for many years and then move really fast to the upside for perhaps 3-9 months. I don't see any signs that silver is wanting to go higher at this time.

100 lbs. dirty alum $.20 lb

these prices have the +$.10 bonus this trip so without the bonus it really sucks

Copper is up roughly 5% from the August 15th ($2.62/lb.) bottom, as other other base metals. Maybe scrap yards will start to raise their prices soon.

Wanted to clean up the outside stuff and threw on two 55-gallon drums of bulkier light steel to free up a little room in the storage container.

Gas hot water heater, dishwasher, several microwaves, a half dozen steel doors, a bike, some thin walled tubing and duct, a well pressure tank, some sign posts, some wire shelving...

19 lbs Al @ $0.25
926 lbs tin @ $0.02
359 mixed steel @ $0.03
Total $34.04

Not hauling anything else at these prices unless I really run out of room.

People ask sometimes why certain things aren't quickly snatched to go to the scrap yard. I mention that a 20# 2-drawer file cabinet takes up a fair amount of room in my SUV and pays less than $1. I have to load it, unload it at home, load it again the day I go to the scrap yard and unload it again when I get there. So I handle it four times and pay for gas- not worth it.
