1953-1964 pennies

Just wondering should the Canadian pennies Elizabeth 2 be kept? Would they be considered as the wheat cents of Canada, and is there a market for them? Thanks for any help.

Canadian pennies minted from 1996 and pre-, have over an American cent's worth of copper in them. Those from 1979 and pre- have more copper in them than American cents and so are more valuable if only for the copper. There are a couple of people I know here that specialize in buying/selling CA cents.

You're on a site called "Realcent" - of course they should be kept.

These are 98% copper. At today's copper prices and based on the weight of these, there is approximately $1.88 in copper value per $1.00 face as of today.

The Coins and Canada web site is an absolutely great website. Spend some time going through the cents, nickels, dimes. etc., and get a basic idea of how much difference there is between one grade and the next higher grade. I think you'll be amazed.

I would consider King George pennies to be the "wheats of Canada". However, I usually keep 1953-1959 queen Elizabeth separate from 1960-1996. Production numbers from the 50's were low compared to the 60's and newer. King George cents and early queen (PRE 1960) are tough to find for face. Must open lots of rolls to build a "collection " of them.
