Old nickels

Is there any demand for older circulated nickels? From 1938 through say 1962. I have been saving them for quiet awhile just wondering if there is a market.

There is a market, but it is rather small. What methods have you used to determine local interest?

About how many nickels do you think you have? Also, have you gone through them to remove the culls and uglies? I’m not in a position to buy them, but thought this would make it easier to sell. If, for instance, you have a coffee can of nickels, a potential buyer might think “Oh no, I have to count all these before I can buy them.” If they have already been counted (and perhaps put into sandwich bags with 100 or 250 each, that should make it easier to sell. Think about someone who is in an antique mall with their spouse and only has a short amount of time before they leave. They may not have time to count a whole bunch of nickels. And the person at the antique mall may not have enough time to help them. Still, doing all the counting doesn’t assure you that they will be sold anytime soon.

What about going to a local coin show or doing a trade for something easier to sell (i.e., 90% silver).

I know of someone who pays 7 cents each for problem free circulated PRE 1960 nickels. He deals in large quantities and you've have to pay shipping to get the coins to him, so I doubt this would be worth pursuing. The other issue is that you'd have to go through the coins again to pull anything out that is from 1960 or later.

Here we are 4 and a half years later. Yes, the market is still rather small, but it is slowly growing. I have been selling them at flea markets for 3-4 dollars a roll (that's 7.5 to 10 cents each). Anything below "G" or above "F" does not go into these rolls. And finally, I would charge much more for 1938 and 1950. Those are very underrated coins (very low mintage)

Four and a half years later and it is still time for more coffee.

I still put together full boxes (2000 coins) grouped into ‘38-‘49 and ‘50-‘59, after pulling out War Nicks, errors, varieties, very low mintage, proofs, and other that has additional value with members of the coin blogs I frequent. Base price per box starts at $200.

When I sort.
38-42,,, war,,46-49,50-55,56-9. Then 60,61,62 P,,68 d, 09 d as I have only 3 Philly's.

But then I break them down to, year,mm. But the 38 d, 50 d rolls are mighty small.

Was just curious: Uncirculated post 1960 until what year? You probably have some sort of cutoff. I also keep Uncirculated post 1960 , but usually only up to around 1971. I have a few from 1972-2000, but I try to keep that to a minimum.

Since it is so few ,there is not a problem.
