Yep was working in the recycling center and lots of postage gets blown around at the end of the shift you have to clean floors under the machines takes about a hour for 4 people and that's where you could find postage and currency.

Pretty darn good start to the new year/decade. US total was over $5 - including silver and wheaties - far outpacing last year's start. Foreigns began very strong with six countries, including two new ones to add to the all-time roster. Let's see if it continues...

I have noticed quite a few batteries at Coinstar machines over the years, especially the ones that are about the size of a nickel. And several of them have worked just fine when I tried them out at home. So don’t throw them in the trash!

I haven't had much luck for a long time with Coinstar machines. But in the past two weeks things picked up a bit. I was in a Walmart and walked to where the Coinstar is located. A woman was feeding a jar of coins into the machine. I thought I'd wait a few minutes and browsed the nearby shelves not expecting anything. At the end of her run I heard a ringing sound. She was out fast. I checked the Coinstar. There was a silver Roosevelt dime. I think it was a 1963.

This past week I went by the same Walmart. There were about 95 cents worth of coins. One penny had what appeared to be a piece of an un-chewed piece of gum on it. Maybe that's what caused the other coins to be rejected. In another Coinstar in a Walmart Marketplace I found about 75 cents worth of coins. I scooped them up right in front of the registers in front of not busy cashiers. About two days later I was close to another Walmart and purchased a few groceries. i checked the Coinstar just before I left. There were about 85 cents worth of coins in the reject slot including a nickel sized German coin marked with a 10. Nothing great besides the Roosevelt dime in any machine. A few shiny Canadian coins were mixed in.

Coindood, thanks for posting this- it is interesting to look at. I wish it showed how long it had been since the previous pickup, but still gleaned a few tidbits from looking at it...

Assuming 31.1 grams/oz. and that all pennies are zincs (I know that is very conservative), I figured that the total weight of all the coins is 868.1 pounds. I wonder how they transport that much weight. If anyone has a video of someone emptying the contents of a CS machine and transporting them, I'd be very interested to watch the process. Pushing a cart with 868.1 lbs. of stuff seems like it would be quite a challenge without some special type of (perhaps motorized) cart.

Also, from looking at Coindood's tally sheet, I was surprised to see more nickels than dimes as the mintages of nickels are usually much lower. Also, it was surprising to see that halves and dollars were practically non-existent.

The receipt also says "2 bins" so perhaps that means the weight was divided in 2.

Was also interesting to note that while the quarter still is the workhorse of US coinage (even in this progessively cashless society) the penny still outnumbers them by more than 2-1. I wonder if this is because of sheer numbers or are people emptying long-held penny jars.

I suspect they use a powered hand truck to extract the bins from the machines. As far as the freight side goes, I've seen Loomis trucks with tail lifts outside the Smith's & Albertsons near me.

Edit: I just called ths store from that receipt and they said the machine sends out a signal to CS when it's full. Pickup times vary of course but they said usually it's a couple of times per month, sometimes more.

Usually the coin stars are slim pickings in my frugal town, but last night I found 2 zincs a nickel and a 1936 merc. A nice find late at night.

Records have fallen! My previous oldest CS find was a 1913 wheatie, that is until a 1909 VDB showed itself on Feb 19th. Was pretty stoked about that, as well as ten (count 'em) ten countries this month, eclipsing Jan 2019's total of eight. We're already ahead of last year's foreign pace. An S clad Bicentennial half dollar was a great addition to 2020's silver coin tally and the overall US total took a nice bump (leap?) upwards. And why not? We had an extra day to hunt in Feb! We march on to March!
