I have several boxes that I purchased over a 2-3 year period several years ago. I decided since my employer sent all us office rats home, that I would finally start sorting them. I am concerned about dumping them.

Results from 1 box ($100 face value)
1939 X 2, 1 of which is in very good shape
1940
1941
1946 X 4
1947 X 2
1948
1949
1953 X 2
1954 X 2
1956 X 2
1957 X 3
1958 X 2
1959

2009 D X 30
We are keeping the 2009's, right? I thought I read something about RealCent cornering the market on 2009 nickels.

Another $100 box of nickels that has been in my possession for 10 years, the latest date inside was 2010 and just a few of those.

1939
1941
1942
1948
1951
1953 D
1955 D
1957, 5 of which 2 X D
1959, 2 of which 1 X D
1960, 4 of which 3 X D
1961, 3 of which 3 X D
1962, 5 of which 3 X D
1963, 2 of which 1 X D

And 30 more, exactly 30 like last box, of the 2009-D's.

1 dateless Indian Head nickel
1 Canadian nickel 1867-1992
1 Canadian nickel 1987

Went to the local grocer and got a few items. Went through the self-check lane and paid for most of my purchase with nickels. $29.10 worth before the machine rejected any more. The rest I dumped in the Coinstar, taking eCertificates to avoid paying the $0.10 plus 12.2% fees. Chili's restaurant and Regal movie theaters, neither of which is open. Next Home Depot. Many more boxes, but I need to lighten the load.

That is amazing on the 2009-D nickels. Since 2009 I have found 1-P and 3-Ds. I dont sort a lot of nickels but do sort some and check all of my pocket change.

By the way, this is my first time to sort nickels and my hope is to find a 35% silver War Nick in the box. No luck so far. By the way #2, sorting nickels is bad for my heart. That comes from my days of sorting a bajillion pennies & many boxes of dimes. When I see a nickel dated 1981, I think, "Hey, that's 95% copper! A keeper." Then I remember that only counts for pennies. You know what's coming next, don't you? When I see a nickel dated 1964, and there are a lot of them, I'm ecstatic. A silver keeper...yeah, if it were a dime. The thrill of victory. The agony of defeat.

Box #3

Latest date in the box: 2010. These are just random rolls of nickels in the clear plastic tubes.

Year/Mint Mark (if any)/Quantity

1939//1
1940//1
1941//2
1946/D (one), S (one)/3
1947//2
1948/D/2
1949/2 total, D X 1
1952//1
1953/D/2
1954//1
1956/D/1
1957/D/3
1958/D/6
1959/D/2
1960/4 total, D X 3
1961/5 total, D X 4
1962/6 total, D X 4
1963/5 total, D X 3

2009/D/51 (all D's)

1 1937 Indian Head nickel, date is quite legible

1 Canadian nickel 1983
1 Canadian nickel 1986
1 Canadian nickel 1993

Thanks for the comments and encouragement!

Shinnosuke:

111 2009-D nickels in just 3 boxes is a bunch! I'd think that would be way better than getting a couple war nickels.
Former stock broker w/ ~20 yrs. at one company. Spoke with 100k+ people and traded a lot (long, short, options, margin, extended hours, etc.).

NOTE: ANY stocks I discuss, no matter how compelling, carry risk- often
substantial. If not prepared to buy it multiple times in modest amounts without going overboard (assuming nothing really wrong with the company), you need to learn more about the market and managing risk. Also, please research covered calls (options) and selling short as well.

Then I guess I better learn up on the value of 2009 nickels. I would have guessed 5 cents each. But wait a minute...111 X $0.05 = $5.55. Yes, of course 111 2009-D nickels are worth more than 2 war nicks which coinflation.com says are worth just $0.87 each now.

Well, shazam!
In the sold category on ebay I just found:
Sold Apr 10, 2020
1 Roll Of 2009 D Circulated Jefferson Nickels - 40 Nickels
$20.00

That's 50 cents each. There are some actual sales of $1.75 for just one. But ebay is such a hassle...and unrealistic, right?

I don't have any P or S mint 2009's, just D's. Box #4 results coming up soon.

Here's what befuddles me:

I joined RealCent in early 2011 (Valentine's Day for you romantic saps out there). I started sorting pennies right away. Just a little at first. Didn't buy my first box of pennies until a while after that. Nickel boxes were months later. However, why I am still getting nothing later than 2010 in the first 4 boxes I sorted? Things that keep small minds like mine up at night.

On finding nothing newer that 2010, I often do not find my first coin of the new year until June sometimes. I think it depends on where you live. Some people have reported finding the new coins in Feb or March but I usually dont find them till several months later than that. If your boxes were purchased before June I dont think it is unusual that the newest you are finding is 2010.

Now that you mention it, that makes sense. I haven't seen any 2020 coins in my change yet.

I'm taking a break from sorting today, but will have more results tomorrow.

Box 6 Harvest.jpg
Box 6 Harvest.jpg (127.82 KiB) Viewed 3804 times

Starting with a picture for Box #6

This box was a different style than the first five I sorted. The wrappers were paper instead of the clear plastic flexi-tubes.

Once again, the latest date in the box was 2010. Based on a change in the box style and in the wrappers, I decided to stack all the 2006 through the latest date as you can see in the photo. Lots of those other years, but still had 25 2009 D's.

The rest of the box:
Year/Mint/Quantity
1939/P/1
1940/P/1
1941/P/1
1946/P/1
1948/P/1
1949/D/1
1953/D/1
1954/P-1,S-1/2
1955/D/3
1957/P-1,D-1/2
1959/D/4
1960/D/1
1961/P-1,D-6/7
1962/P-2,D-3/5
1963 /D/5

2009/D/25 (all D's)
Running total for 5 boxes: 210

1 Dateless Indian Head Penny
1 War Nickel 1943 P
2 War Nickels 1944 P

So I finally got the war nicks I was hoping for! On to the next box.

In a random roll of nickels...

Latest date: 2017

1 1942 Jefferson nickel; unfortunately no mint mark, thus no silver.

Not another keeper in the whole roll.

1953/P/2
1955/D/1
1957/D/1
1958/D/1
1959/D/3
1960/P/1
1961/D/4
1962/P-1, D-5/6
1963/P-4, D-5/9

2009/D/27 (all D's)
Running total for 7 boxes: 237

1 1944 S War Nickel in very good shape. Cleaned perhaps.
1 dateless Indian Head

About my 2009 D's...

I found my first 2009 P while sorting today.

Anyone think these coins were minted that way? Or is this post-mint damage?

Remember the box these coins were in have been sitting in my garage for 8-9 years.

Box #8

Latest date in the box: 2011. Random rolls of nickels in the clear semi-flexible plastic tubes. The rolls were about 95% 2011. Only a few rolls were solid 2011 dates though and one couldn't tell without splitting them open.

Year/Mint/Quantity
1949/D/2
1954/D/1

2009/D/1 (all D's)

Addiction sucks. Chase had the doors open to the lobby. Letting in that nice78 degree sunshine...$20 dimes...low and behold. 1944 mercury. At first sight, in the roll, I thought it was foreign, as the edge was smooth.
