I might have some good news. Copper was up 21% for the second quarter. This is the biggest gain since Sept. 2010. That was right when silver began the big move from the teens to $49+/oz. in Spring, 2011. So maybe those depressed metals prices will start to go back up.

Potato chips! Probably made in the 1970s. It had a hopper and conveyor system that moved product to three spouts which each dumped a designated number of conveyor bins into a chip bag, or in our case into three sorting machines. It was decommissioned as we no longer bulk sort copper pennies and moved to a different corner of the warehouse.

During the copper penny sorting heyday there were three Mach 9 machines running all day and they had to get fed. A forklift would dump about 3/4 ton at a time into the primary hopper and then Old Blue would feed the coin machines as they went, using optical sensors to tell when they were hungry.

That is a lot of sorting! How often did you have to change the elastomeric pads? (And how many millions of coins did you utimately run through them?).

I worked at Brandt for 11 years (1989-2000) and the Mach9 was a great machine.

I was confused when I just googled "Brandt Mach9" and saw all the "Glory Mach9" results.

Poor Brandt, sold off yet again, now owned by Glory.

Brandt, founded by Edward Brandt in 1890-->sold to Triangle Industries 1984 (Nelson Peltz/Peter May) -->management buy-out 1994 -->De La Rue purchase 1995 (renamed to De La Rue Cash systems in 1997) --> Sold to Carlyle Group in 2008 and renamed Talaris--> Sold to Glory 2012

Funny story: when DeLaRue renamed Brandt to De La Rue Cash systems in 1997 and re-branded all the equipment to De La Rue to much fanfare, sales tanked, as everyone in North America wanted "Brandt" equipment (idiots threw away a 100 year old brand name); in six months they added the "Brandt" name back to the branding.

A couple weeks ago I gave some good news on copper.

Ditto for aluminum. Aluminum had about a 2-3 day period where it went from 75 cents to $1 (a whopping 33% increase) per the charts on Kitcometals.com.

Let me clarify- at least in my area they ARE buying aluminum, just not cans.

My guess is they only had one company they sold to that paid a decent price and I did hear about a bankruptcy (out of business type- not reorganizing and attempting to reopen the doors) for what was presumably that company.

Wednesday was the first time since before the COVID crisis that I went to the scrap yard. Here are the results:
