I wonder if this so-called mint mark could have been taken off a different coin and glued onto the 1876. The following year there was an 1877 S over horizontal S (nice photo in the Redbook), but if I had to speculate I'd guess it was a mintmark glued onto the coin- and it DOESN'T look like it came from a seated quarter to me. It may have come from a different denomination or type coin. I'm definitely not an expert on this but my radar goes off when I feel that something just doesn't look right. And this one doesn't look right. Sorry about that. Also, it isn't likely worth the expense of paying to get it certified. You might try going to one of those shows where people give verbal opinions and see what they say.
