nickels worth keeping

My main bank told me I could get a box of pretty much anything (except halves) every week if I put in a standing order. I was thinking of stacking some sealed nickel boxes. Maybe get some Lincolns from another branch to hand search. It's winter, after all.

I've also toyed with the idea of keeping the boxes sealed, but what fun would that be?

I pluck out all pre-1960's and the gemmy looking ones. Yesterday I found quite a few dated 1965 in MS-65+ condition, the luster is amazing. Looks like they were minted yesterday. I love finding coins that look like that. Haven't found any war nickels lately though.

A very friendly girl at one of my CU branches does not charge me any extra premiums for the boxes I order. I'll definitely be brining her a few nice Christmas presents this year!

The first week, I got a sealed box.

This week, they broke into "my" box because they were short on inventory. I took home 30 BWR's.

Loose rolls are problematic. I can stare at full stacked boxes and suffer no immediate urges. The plastic bag of rolls called to me this morning and I caved.

I hope this is not the start of something, as the third roll I cracked open yielded a full date 1928. Sandblast appearance, but a still a buffalo.

$160 BWR's yielded:

67 pre-1963 Jefferson (didn't separate the '64's), 1 really nice '39, 1 decent '53S (mintage 19mil)
1 Canada 1992
1 proof 1979 Jefferson, beautiful condition. Must've just escaped captivity
3 Buffalo, 1 dated 1928..2 dateless, 1 one those is D minted
20 or so various years, nice enough to set aside just because
A handful of Westward Journey (I only saved the better ones)
A smaller group of '82 & '83 which actually aren't worth segregating

What I didn't find:

Any war nicks
Any Canada .999
No 3 legged buffalos (buffaloes?)
No 1913 Liberty

Opened 2 boxes today. Found many oldies and a few 1939's, but my best find was a 1942-P war nickel and a 1934 buffalo with a nice readable date.

Hurry up and hoard all the nickels you can before they're gone... only a matter of time.

It is really crazy how the '09 nickel is so elusive. Who would have known??

I actually did find another one that I'd bought a few years back, or, someone gave to me in a 2x2. At any rate, just glad I have some!!

Found one last week. MS condition.

Searched only 1 box today. Some decent finds...

- 3 war nickels (a record for one box)
- 1 Buffalo 1936 in VG
- 1 V nickel 1902 (definitely looks 120 years old, lots of crud, but date was readable)
- 20 were pre-1960.

And we'll have fun, fun, fun until the gubmint takes the nickels away.

It is good to see that nickels from the 50's are obtaining numismatic value/interest. I recently saw an ad on Craigslist where somebody is looking to buy pre 1960 nickels. He obviously isn't interested in melt value because he can buy those for face. Don't know what he's paying, but obviously it's more than face. In the past, coin dealers/shops etc generally consider the late 40's/50's nickels to be junk. I've even gotten them in change from two different shops. But if people are willing to pay more than face, then they are definitely worth keeping , even WITHOUT the metal factor.

Knowing how hard the 2009 nickels and dimes are to find is one thing.

Finding someone willing to buy decent quantities at, say, several times face at a coin show is much more meaningful to me.
