Was a little surprised to find these BU '70s in a small batch that came today. Quite a few earlier Unc's as well.

My LCS today only had 4 Canadian nickels, but they were all 999s, and the fourth one was a 1970. That makes 11 1970s found in only 3,400+ Canadian nickels purchased in bulk buys at LCSs or found in roll searches. Not too shabby for south central PA.

Hard for us to find they only minted 5,726,010.

And then there's this...deliberate defacing of 1970 nickels. Can't tell you how many of these I've run across the past 3 years. Got a 20lb box today that had at least twenty such.

My guess? Someone's bright idea to increase the value of their own unmolested stash of seventy-s

No, I don't think so. These are clearly "x's"

No offense to my Canadian brothers, but there are a lot of scratched coins around. Certainly not limited to 1970 nickels. I've seen many with heavy scratches in the 1968 quarters and dimes minted in pure nickel. Do people there think they'll be able to change a coin minted in nickel to 50 or 80% silver by scratching the Hell out of it? Perhaps it's just a default activity during those long periods of darkness. We Americans prefer to spend our time causing crud to form on our coinage. Take a gander at your average handful of zinc-composite Lincolns. Pitiful. just pitiful.

Going through a mini hoard of pre-82 Canadian nickels. Have gone through about 12,500 nickels and have found 17 that were dated 1970. Several do have very nice lustre.

I see a lot of them with the same scratch patter as the one pictured. I kind of like the candy machine theory. I think it must be something like that. I see too many that look jut like that for it to be someone deliberately defacing it like that. I would love t find out exactly what is doing that. Mystery!

I have also seen these scratch patterns on .999 nickels. As for 1970, I have 66 of them in my collection. About half of them were pulled from bank rolls while the other half were purchased at coin shops for 20 to 40 cents apiece.

I read the ad, at first I thought it was $3 per roll!!! Then I realized that he wants almost $3 per coin!!!! That would be almost 120 per roll!!!! He will own them for the duration of his life.

Why did I open this thread. Still half asleep, I cruised over to ebay to see what 1970 nickels are seling for, and ended up buying a roll
