Spring is when the tokens bloom apparently. That's the only explanation for the bumper crop of them this month. But other sections did pretty nicely as well: a trio of new foreign countries, a super old wheatie, and the parking lot continues to provide abandoned change at a record-setting pace. In addition, today I got my biggest single Coinstar haul of the year -- 45 coins -- which ties the highest from last year (July 17th). Let's hope the coming summer heat doesn't drive more people indoors and away from the green machines.

Had to share this frustrating, yet comical, update- last night I had to stop at one of our Walmarts that are less than safe, and I always check the Coinstar there. For this trip, I could hear someone dumping coins in the machine as I walked in, so I figured I'd be in luck once they left. I looked and noticed that there were pennies scattered all over the floor by the person!! There was one a bit of a ways away from the depositor, so I picked it up and went on my way (it was a '75-D).

I went and got what I needed, and was probably about 10 minutes in my time getting the items and going back to the machine. To my surprise, the person was STILL dumping coins in the machine!! I was pretty surprised. I pretended to get on my phone for a moment near the area, expecting they would wrap it up. Machine was still going.

I went and paid for my item, and on the way out of the store, I could see they were still dumping money in that machine. In retrospect, I should have gone out and sat in the car for a bit to wait. But I needed to get home, and that place is not someplace where you want to hang out and take in the sights, lol.

Another month, another batch of decent finds. Foreigns were especially good in May, with three more nations joining 2023's roster. 25 countries and not even half way thru the year (dare I say it?) there is a strong chance of breaking the record of 38. Speaking of records, people in my apartment complex apparently believe spare change is meant to be tossed away. I'm still averaging two cents a day in that department, a pace I never thought I'd maintain. I'll pass a penny a day in June, months before the Nov 4th record, with $7.30 the goal for the year.

May totals (2023 totals)

1¢ - .64 (3.89)
5¢ - .25 (2.50)
10¢ - 1.90 (10.30)
25¢ - .75 (18.50)
Total - 3.54 (35.19)

Apartment complex parking lot: 3.38

Canada
1 cent (1981, 2001)
5 cents (2007)
10 cents (1974, 2007, 2008, 2011)
25 cents (1973, RCMP)

Great Britain
5 pence (2002)

India <---23rd country for 2023! 76th all time!
1 rupee (2002)

Italy
2 euro cents (2010)

Mexico
50 centavos (2004, 2016)
5 pesos (2016)

Panama <---24th country for 2023!
1/10th balboa (1973)

Philippines
5 sentimos (1980)
10 sentimo (2009, 2013)
25 sentimo (2018)
1 piso (1997, 2011)

Romania
10 bani (2008) <---25th country for 2023!

Tokens
Spraymasters Car Wash (no date)

2023 Countries (25)

Dumped $1000 in halves on 05-30-23. On the ledge of the lobby coin counter was 36 cents. A beat up quarter and a dime in rough shape and a zincoln with no apparent problems. Evidently they were in the reject chute and someone removed them but did not take them. Bonus for me!

I have always wanted to say how much change you think you have in there, and then make an offer to save them time and the fee. I bet most times people think they have less than what coinstar pays them.

FEW COINS: In my area, mid-atlantic state, the local Walmart moved its coinstar from customer service to close to the exit. For several months I have seen very few left-over coins in coinstars. I check two from time to time, same Walmart and a FoodLion nearby. Over ten years or so I found $50 worth of silver. Lately there is practically nothing. No silver in a long time. I have decreased my use of cash. I use credit cards frequently (pay all at end of month). I wonder if other people are doing the same, using credit cards that is.

In that case , you threaten to buy the bank and have the teller mopping floors with no breaks!!!! LOL. On a more serious note, hide the dirty, nasty, damaged filthy coins in rolls. Put a nice shiny coin on each end and that's it.

From a CS machine at my local Walmart:

Quarters: 3
Dimes: 5
Nickels: 9
Pennies: 3
Total: $1.73

…and this was just a single trip today. It is amazing how often people leave $ behind!

I'm pretty happy with the 2023 half-year mark. Foreigns, tokens, parking lot finds are all performing better than expectations and the US total is nicely outpacing 2022. Silver and wheaties are about par with last year or slightly above. Goals for the 2nd half? Passing $100 in US; breaking the all-time total for foreign countries, which stands at 38; reaching double digits in the wheat total; getting to 1.5 ozs in silver and $7.30 from the parking lot. Let's see how we do.

June totals (2023 totals)

1¢ - .81 (4.71)
5¢ - .30 (2.80)
10¢ - 2.70 (13.00)
25¢ - 2.00 (20.50)
Total - 5.82 (41.01)

Included in June's total: 1936 wheatie, 1951 dime

Apartment complex parking lot: 3.80 (Maintaining 2¢ a day!)

3 zinc ,burned, stuck together

OK....first one, a gent was walking out with a peanut jar of coin. Hey, you break it. Yes...so I put my coin back in the truck.
Went in to see if they had any cwr.
The guy that works on the machine from the cu, was grumbling about the crap folks put into the machine. Out of the, internal reject, we picked out, a rock, petrified gum drop, screws, pills...in cellophane.
Then he points to the reject slot.

Score..
