I wanted to send this to grading in 2022. Got a little confused by the process, and gave up. It's a goal to send this year.

You've been sitting on this for over a year? :?

You do realize (if confirmed) there are maybe 7 or 8 of these known to exist, making them rarer than copper 1943's. You must not be too excitable. What is your resting pulse? Like 3 beats per minute?

Send it to me...I'll hold onto it for you

Take it to a coin dealer and they can send it in for you or call PCGS and ask for assistance on how to send in. I highly r3commend installing the PCGS app, which makes submission easier. Make sure you have good insurance on the shipment.

I have the app. It's a bit of a learning curve (*things i said 2 years ago, and no progress). The PCGS submission agreement is a tad scary. And I don't want to fill it out wrong. I am messaging them to get guidance.

have you weighed it yet?

Cu cent should be close to 3.1 grams

Cu-plated cents are 2.5 grams

(or use a popsicle stick balance)

The video showed it on a scale at 3.1 g

I weigh every 1983 cent I come across and I’ve never seen one.

substantial. If not prepared to buy it multiple times in modest amounts without going overboard (assuming nothing really wrong with the company), you need to learn more about the market and managing risk. Also, please research covered calls (options) and selling short as well.

Since it weighs 3.1 grams, the next step is authentication. Most coin dealers are not capable of this. They can only make a guess based on their experience. Sometimes they are accurate. Sometimes they are not.

Counterfeits of 1983 coppers outnumber genuine, unaltered coins by a factor of thousands. This is why a reputable grading service is essential.

I wish you well with this.

I was thinking of this last night, specifically altered dates. In the case of the 1983, the only copper cent that comes close to serving as the foundation for the fake would be a 1963, maybe the '73. Can a 6 or 7 be made to look like an 8? I don't even think that's possible. Enough to fool a casual observer, sure...but faking it for profit, if that was the faker's motive (as opposed to harmless hoaxing), the counterfeiter would have to know the coin would be super scrutinized by professional graders. No way a date fixing gets past them.

Besides date manipulating, how else could a Lincoln cent be forged to have the right look, right sound, and correct weight?

I am in my 60s, and microwelding has been around almost as long as I have been alive.

Even a century ago, altering individual coins was an art form.

When someone skilled is bored, things happen.

My point in my earlier post is that there are few people who can truly authenticate this coin, and they are not likely to own or work in a coin shop. A qualified grading service would be best.

I just learned there’s another translational copper date. The 1982 D small date. I didn’t realize this and didn’t check for it before selling the hoard. When I did a quality check by hand for zincs.

If your coin looks like the one in the video, one thing that would be interesting is if you decided to sell it as is (might be real/might not) here on this site.

I could foresee someone offering perhaps $500- $1,000- just to take a chance. You could get some quick $ w/o having the hassle of getting it certified.

By the way, I once had a potentially very valuable item. It was a copper nickel blank blanchet, so we know it was minted from 1856-64. I have never seen one anywhere else. Sadly, it was stolen along with lots of other coins I had in November, 2019.

The cops arrested a couple of people and got about 7% of my stuff back. Oh well…
