Worth Saving pre-1960 nickels?

Postby Pennysaved » Wed Aug 02, 2023 1:42 am

I was a hand sorter of nickels that I bought from the bank several years ago and saved all the pre-1960 nickels.

Is it worth keeping these or would you just put them back in circulation?

I know someone who pays 7 cents each for pre-59’s and 59-P’s. That’s not too exciting, frankly.

You might consider trying to get 9-10 cents each for them at your local coin club or a local coin show.

substantial. If not prepared to buy it multiple times in modest amounts without going overboard (assuming nothing really wrong with the company), you need to learn more about the market and managing risk. Also, please research covered calls (options) and selling short as well.

The premium on early Jefferson nickels is low. Typically, after removing War Nicks, Key Dates, better condition, and errors of various types, I divide into two date ranges. 1938-1949, and 1950-1959. When I have a box (2000 coins), I list them at $400/box and $300/box, respectively. Do I get that? Sometimes.

One day soon I have to decide on their future.

As of this post nickel value is still over face value based on metal content. I save them all. But one day my kids will have to get rid of them... there is a post here with nickel mintage some have much lower numbers than the rest.

Excellent thread which has been touched upon in the past in other threads. I know a dealer that pays 6.25 cents per ($2.50 per roll). I suspect there are other dealers paying the same price. There are also dealers that absolutely will not buy them except for 1950 D or UNC rolls (good luck finding those!!!!!). But most importantly, I successfully SELL these for 3-4 dollars per roll (coins range from G to F condition). Just sold a roll of 1946 for 4 dollars at a flea market last Sunday. Sold 7 rolls of pre 1960 at that same flea market a few weeks ago. I have only been selling 1946-1959, but I am thinking about selling some 1939, 1940, 1941 since I have almost three thousand of those.

I ran across a roll each of 1940's decade and 1950's decade nickels that Dad and I sorted out of a box a few years ago. I was just wondering what I should do with them. I've been considering cashing in my nickel mini-hoard, but hate to just dump those older ones.

Do these rolls include the WAR nickel years? Also, if you have a roll of 1950, make sure you remove the 1950 D.

For me at this point I have few but just spend them. The few cents over face is just not work keeping them around. They were worth 7-10 cents a piece on this forum for example and used to get those prices when I sold them here. However that was well over a decade ago and with inflation hitting hard it seems silly to try to deal with them to get the same prices.

Do not see them ever really being collectable in my opinion

If you're talking mixed date rolls the possible premium in rather negligible.

Solid date rolls of the lower mintage circulated examples (1951-S, 1949-S, etc.) actually sell pretty well.

Yeah, unfortunately most of mine are the common dates and well-worn. I did hold back the two rolls that are 1940s and 50s, and the odd couple of individual 1930s, but I otherwise cashed in my entire nickel stash yesterday. Combined with Dad's out was only $180.

I pulled out the very few War nickels and added them to my silver stack long ago :)

Correction to what I stated earlier: I did hold onto the roll of 1950s nickels. Iguess I need to check for that 1950 D.

Edit again: I checked - no 1950 at all.

I meant to add that I strongly prefer older Canadian nickels that are .999 nickel vs. U.S. nickels which are only 25% nickel (in spite of the name).
