The 2004 & 2005 Westward Nickels

While I don't have the mintage figures for these 4 mintages, I have been setting them aside for future use. Does anyone feel that it would be a good strategy to save these coins for future possible savings (provided that the coins are in real good shape.

I do like these nickels from the series. I have begun to save them in tubes for safe keeping. I really like the Ocean View design. The bison ones are pretty cool too.

I save all my nickels, but I also separate the Lewis and Clarks and keep them in tubes.

They made so many that they won't be worth much extra except possibly in mint rolls.

The people that really want these coins, have them already.

Sure, future bingo players will buy them for albums and folders. You'll see dealers sell them for .15 or .20 in 2x2s at coin shows. However, you're not going to pay your table fees selling them. Nor are they fun to lug around when you don't sell them.

If you like them,keep em. From an investment standpoint, doubtful they appreciate a lot.

BU rolls already sell for a premium on eBay. I wouldn't be surprised if circulated rolls would sell too (moreso in the future).

the nice thing is nickels have intrinsic value. if we were talking about quarters, that would be different.

Well, sometimes I'm the cheerleader and other times the wet blanket. This will be one of those wet banket times.

Happened to have the May 11th Coin Dealer Newsletter (aka The Grey Sheet) lying on my desk and decided to look up the value of these wonder coins. In the BU Rolls section, the rolls of 40 coins for 2004 and 2005 nickel issues carry a premium of one to three nickels above the $2 face roll value.

Dealers may buy BU rolls for face, but others may reduce their value by 25% as sort of a nuisance tax. Nice looking coins, but abandon most or all hope of getting rich at some future point in time. Their only other competition at the bottom of the scale is a BU roll of 1964 P nix will fetch $2.05. I'd rather take my chances with the 64s as a full step example is worth big money (if they even exist due to the very poor strikes).

I've managed to save at least one archived tube of each kind! All others I get will end up in my general nickel stash...

We should all set aside our 64's for a year and then dump them at the same time across the country...then watch the other sorting sites to see them complain about solid boxes of 64's.

There was an Executive Order issued by Lyndon Baines Johnson in 1967 mandating every roll of nickels have one 1964 coin. This order was never stringently enforced as many financial institutions and coin services chose to insert many, many multiple '64s in thousands of coin rolls to dilute the distribution of this year of the Jefferson five cent piece.

Old thread but today my dad, age 94, told me to go look in the closet of his burrow at the old folks home and get a bag out. An unopened cloth bag from the US Mint of $50 face of 2005 Westward Journey nickels. He said take them home, I'm tired of moving it around. Pretty sweet. Today the google machine says a nickel is worth 7.5 cents in copper and nickel content.

TOTALLY AGREE with this post. Let’s say you set them aside for ten years. When you then adjust for inflation, you will have to sell at a fairly substantial premium just to break even. Not what I consider to be a truly good investment.

If you find something you can sell right now for a decent profit (i.e., silver coins, errors, or even copper cents), great. If it’s something you have to sit on for years, it seems like more often than not the coins aren’t worth setting aside.
