Spent the afternoon resorting my wheats. When I tally my $10 increments, I put them in a roll. When I get 10, I sort to the year. Well kind of. 44,5,6 dps get lumped. Also, 56,7,8 D.

I bought 3 boxes this Fall, all were '22 & '23. Never even brought them home. Another branch bought them off me still in the box.

Unless I see a hoard on facebook/craigslist I doubt I'll be buying anymore.

Atlantic City, NJ is my record so far. And, I sorta meant "hoard" as in batches of raw coin that pop up for sale from time to time. Penny collections I could then sort.

That reminds me...there was a guy here (GTOJohn, I think)....he had a big quantity of coppers for sale, and he lived in the next town over. Tried private messaging him but I never heard back.

While waiting on a coin shop appointment yesterday, I stumbled onto a rarely visited branch of my bank and inquired about a box of cents. To my surprise they said, "Of course...one box?" I only had money enough for one

Later, driving home, I was more excited about the pennies than the yellow metal I bought.

Ended up being a very respectable sort, 25+% CU. Including a worn but neato 1922D and a very pretty rainbow toned 1974.

I stopped sorting a while ago. Work picked up after the pandemic and I don't have the spare time. Also, my dump banks took their counters out of the lobbies, and I don't have easy access anymore.

I keep thinking about getting back into halves.

I cleaned up and lubricated my Ryedale over the weekend. I bribed my 12-year-old son to open 15 boxes worth of rolls (he just dumps the pennies into buckets), and I ran them all through the sorting machine.

I still have a backlog of over 50 unopened bank boxes of pennies in my house, because I have a standing order for 6 boxes per week from a friendly branch.

I must say, I was surprised at how good the copper was in this weekend's boxes. Now I have 2 buckets of copper to search for wheaties.

I'm down to only pocket change "sorting." The cost, time, and effort associated with buying and dumping coin began to outweigh the enjoyment I was getting from it.

Maybe one day I'll pick it up again, but for now I'm just living the dream of getting excited finding it in my change (got a wheatie yesterday... woot!).

I received a 1929 wheatie this afternoon in change from the Dollar Tree!

Nice! Not only do you find a wheatie, but you find one that was minted during the Depression, and you find it in a store meant for ppl with little money in 2024!

Goodness, I hope so! I've never found a key date penny in circulation before. Heck, just finding a pre-1940 with a mint mark on it is a rare event! I'd say about 99% of the wheaties I find are 1940-1958 or pre-1940 Philly. I've already found every single Philly wheat cent. It's gotten pretty difficult to fill blank slots in my album. They're almost all sub-20 million mintage.

But I did find something cool this week! An uncirculated set token. Heavily circulated, of course.
