Yes, that's why I put quotes around "sold". Serious question though, now that it has been "bought" from Ebay's point of view, does he now owe a slew of fees based on a $50k sale?

No, the fees come out of the "take" only. So if the buyer doesn't pay the seller only pays the listing fee.
