Other mega-group buys to consider

This forum is for discussing hunting and collecting US and Canadian circulation Silver Bullion Coins, other types of minted bullion, and other types of precious and base metal investments other than Bullion Pennies and Nickels.

Other mega-group buys to consider

Postby barrytrot » Sun Mar 13, 2011 8:20 pm

Since there was a lot of interest in a mega group buy, I brainstormed and wrote this list of other possible mega-buys that the group here could participate in together:

1. Create a futures account with the intention of taking delivery on a 1k or 5k silver contract. (or gold or platinum or even copper, I suppose.)
- Once delivered have one of the members like Market Harmony or Kurr that can cut it into smaller parts do so.
- Either divvy it up between the share holders or sell it.
-- As a side idea, take that silver and create a very nice "Real Cent" silver bar and start selling them on eBay, here, Craigslist, etc.
-- The idea of creating a "Real Cent" silver bar could also be done on a smaller level, with just existing dollars converted to silver.

2. Buy a monster box or some other large buy. (Single event)

3. Each "share holder" sets aside a certain monthly amount and funds a "silver buying group". This group either buys .999 or 90% or something every month or week with the new money and delivers it to a single location. Then a member can pay at any time to get their share delivered directly to them or the group sells at some point in the future and redistributes the profits. (Multiple events.)
- #2 and #3 are essentially the same, but #3 there is new buying every month or week or quarter.
- In both cases the delivery is to a single location to reduce overall costs and members pay for delivery to them.

4. Get together money into a corporation and then start putting out offers on "mining claims". Similar to the existing 1.8 mil deal, but more attainable. And the corporation just uses whatever it's funds are instead of having to shoot for a million to start.

5. Start a mega-copper hoard. Portland Mint has the ability to get any amount of copper and has secure storage as well. The group could probably negotiate a discount on the listed rate and then buy multiple tons.

6. Get together money into a corporation and then start putting out offers on other types of land that isn't metal related. I know, not "metal", but still a potential idea.

This is might be worth looking into.
If I have the gift of prophesy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to move mountains but do not have love I am nothing. And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned but do not have love it profits me nothing.

these sound fun to do, I like the idea of the first one, not sure how well it would work.

Or stand for delivery and take a $50.00 p/Oz payoff like the big boys do.

How long are those contracts?

As long as you want them to be. You can buy a future for any month of the year and into future years.

Once you stand for delivery, you have to wait approximately 30 days to be "assigned".

Then you have to wait around 15 to 30 days to have the contract delivered to the nearest "storage facility". For silver, that is basically "New York".

Once at the storage facility, you contact them and arrange to have it delivered to you.

So there are costs:

1. Cost of the contract.
2. Fees (i.e. $3 or whatever transaction fee. Not much)
3. Cost to take delivery. Generally $200 or so.
4. Cost for delivery charges to the storage facility. This I'm not sure about.
5. Cost to ship from the storage facility to you. Most likely it is not an option to pick up on site :)

Alright, Chris---I can put in for 3/5 of a monster box of ASE's, Maples, or Phils. You know you want to go in for the other 2/5 ;) But majority buyer gets the box

I would do 1 + 2.
"If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their Fathers conquered....The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs."

I find the idea of forcing delivery on a futures contract a VERY interesting prospect.

I have no doubt that (after significant run-around and fees) we would be served upon. For one or two measely contracts we would not be offered the rumored "$50/oz payoff" that holders of 100's or 1,000's of contracts supposedly command. Although I have doubts about that entire premise in the first place.

While I agree with taking a contract in principle, it is naive to think it would accomplish anything. When all is said and done, it would probably more expensive and time consuming than just purchasing pre-made silver bars/coins on the secondary market. It may be an interesting experience though!

I was actaully thinking about #5 this weekend. A lot of members were talking about only putting in $50 to $100 in at a time. If you put $100 into silver now you get less than 3 ounces. Doing copper is more feasible to fit the whole group.

I would even put some of my own personal money into a group buy.

If we got enough money together I could sell at a rather steep discount and also offer discounted rates on storage. Also with the buy back program is gives the opportunity for anyone to basicallty instantly cash out.

This could be a profound event for Realcent. We could allow the Portland Mint do all the sorting with their high-volume machinery and store "everyone's" copper hoard in a large scale, physically backed pool account. Like Adam points out, it would be completely liquid (cash out at any time) and eliminate the need to sort altogether. How many copper lovers would commit to this method?

Obviously Adam and the Portland Mint don't have a monopoly on the copper market. However, if we all banded together with him to make a large pool account, could that not significantly drive up what people are willing to pay for copper? Just as copper spot going from $1.50/lb to $4.50/lb drove buying prices from 1.35x to 1.7x, I think this could do something similar. Maybe it's time to finally cross into the 2x land again?

I like all the ideas, however this sticks out for some reason. Seems very doable in a short time frame. I'd be interested.

I like #1.

But did anyone think about what to do when the order cannot be filled and they offer cash instead?

Or is this being done to intentionally CAUSE them to default?

Also, I would participate if only there was a way to be a player without my name on anything.
Actually, all of these ideas would require me giving out personally identifying information. :(

I have a couple Canadian companies sitting around looking for a project. That would effectively "offshore" whatever we do for most of the members here.

I like your way of thinking.

I also like what Highroller had to say.

We should start with a monster box of silver.. 50 shares, each share 10 coins plus a chance at the empty box.
Tulving has no Eagles...
Maple leafs are 2.49 over spot(34.78) so 37.27 per oz x 500 oz = 18635 for the box divided by 50 shares = 372.70 each share before expenses.
If someone was the point person (fronts the 18K, splits the coins, mails them, sends invoices for tax purposes), he/she should get something for the trouble.. maybe a free share? (that would be 2% of the cost of the box)
So a share would be 380.30 plus 10.50 shipping..
39.08 per maple delivered..

I would buy a share..

I don't think the point man should get so much. For one they get to open the box which is fun :) For another they don't pay shipping to them, so they save that way.

Their expenses are time, tape, and gas to the post office.

I would say giving the point man the box and maybe $20 off is enough.

One question though: Aren't the individual containers 20 coin rolls (25 for Maples)? If so then splitting under a "roll" would require a lot of extra effort in order to keep the coin pristine. I would think that the "size of a roll" would probably be the min share.

Why? Are you somehow under the impression that APMEX or Tulving wouldn't honor a request to purchase silver from a buyer known as Involuntary Tentacle? Afraid that might exceed your grasp?
