Are U selling half rolls on eBay?

Postby StoreOfValue » Tue Mar 15, 2011 4:39 pm

Just curious if these are RC'ers selling bank rolls on eBay. I have noticed a few new sellers with lots of bidders and sales ranging from about $15-$18 + shipping for the $10 rolls.

Also, what do you think about the ethics of this? I think the sellers are generally being very honest about the POSSIBILITY of silver and buyer's beware, but it just seems sleazy. I would like to make 50% on my rolls but I just can't pull the trigger.

You'll find that many people here claim that they are against the idea. However, I think that it's the definition of capitalism to sell whatever someone is willing to buy.

The people who buy these are inordinately ignorant as they could buy $10 rolls from their nearest bank for TEN DOLLARS, instead of paying twice that much for the chance (and a small one at that) to find silver. I'm as big a fan of capitalism as anyone here, but it's obvious from his photos that he wants to create the impression that silver is everywhere when he, as a sorter, would know the opposite to be true. It may not be illegal, or even against ebay policy, but he's taking advantage of people who don't know any better and he knows it. I'm not THAT kind of capitalist...

A famous PT Barnum quote comes to mind. If people are foolish enough to buy lotto tickets this is kosher.
“Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are inevitably ruined.”

Perfect example. And the lottery even makes the news. The media might as well be selling the tickets themselves when big jackpots come around. If this guy wants to make some money doing this, like Norman Osborn once said, "To each his own."

It seems from recent posts that banks are increasingly reluctant to sell boxes, so maybe those of us who can get bank rolls are a unique minority. That would be capitalistic.

Even when you can order the boxes, increasingly there's nothing in them. I'm up to 14 skunks in a row right now, have six left to check but don't expect that to change.

I fail to see what the guys on ebay are doing would be considered unethical based on how the world and businesses operate on a daily basis, its better than a lottery ticket as it has a cash value even if you don't win.

However what i do have a problem with is that they need to up their profit margin if they are going to come close to the big names in the world of "Removing Sheeple from their assets by selling vastly overpriced goods that are easily available for significantly less elsewhere" category. These ebays seem to be more in the "This is either for your convenience because you cannot get said product near you, or your too lazy to go buy them yourself" category. To compete with the first category they need to be selling the halves for a lot more if they want to compete with the granddaddy Bottled Water.

I have more of a problem with clothing companies charging what they charge than I do these ebayers.

as far as Im concerned if someone wants to buy something someone else is selling that is between them.

but if yo want to look at weird ebay auctions what about those folks who list some junky walking liberty half in a flip with words like SUPER CHEAP, or some outrageous price written on the flip, and awesome coin!! etc... then have a buy it now of 160 for a half that is super worn and in many cases had little to no numismatic value even in better condition.... honestly a rolls of 10 dollars in halves for 25 bucks is a much better deal then a non numismatic silver half for 160.

theres also some folks who sell wheat pennies, and somehow have large large amounts of "unsearched" wheats that just happen to have a mercury dime on the end of the roll? Sure that could happen, but there must be hundreds of those rolls for sale on ebay. Id bet one of my feet most of those were purposely put there likely all of them. heck having the merc is rare enough Id say let alone the merc is ALWAYS at the visible part of the roll. and its usually an eary one in the teens or 20s.... theres not even the slightest chance those are legit.

then youve got these people who weigh the coins, not accounting for the fact its 90 percent silver not 100. and sell it as 6 ounces of silver. though thats probably the best deal out of these... still I find it rather shady.

I think what bothers the people who find this unethical is the pictures of a motherlode of silver in opened rolls, implying that you too could find this many... when any roll searcher knows that would be the dream of a lifetime. You'd be quite lucky to find as many in an entire box as this guy portrays in one roll. Wouldn't have any problems with the marketing of a product like this if he were to, say, picture a few (2 0r 3) 40's or 90's at the bottom of his listing and state, "the odds are good, that sooner or later, you'll find some silver in one of your rolls."
