The guy in the clip (1:45) claims that you can distinguish Silver and Silver-Plate by smell. Silver smells "sweet" while Silver-plate has a "sulfur/sour" smell.
So.....truth, or false?

I can't think of why a plated object would smell any different than a solid silver item. I think when you plate something it is in pure silver and solid sterling has 7.5 % copper in it, but I know that pure silver does not smell like sulfur. I would not bring items to that fellow for appraisal.
