So my buddy picked me up a 4 oz Engelhard bar on Tuesday for spot ($38.48)... paid $154 for it.
About two hours later, my buddy calls me up and says some guy is going to pay me $180 for it.. I said no. (like what was I going to do with $26 when spot had already risen by 75 cents. So to reinvest it and buy 4 more oz, and have only a few bucks left over, didn't seem worth the effort for me.)
The buyer then said that he would give me 5 1-oz Engelhard bars for the 4 oz bar.. and I said hell yea! That seems like a heck of a deal.
My question is.. am I missing something? Is the 4 oz Engelhard bar rare? I know I am getting 1 oz more silver (25%) but I have a funny feeling this guy is trying to pull a fast one on me. And I am looking for some wisdom...

Some odd sized bars go for a hefty premium, for purely collector value. Since you're online, I'd check past auction prices on ebay for similar bars. If no bars like it have sold, than it is an oddity.

If the 1oz bars are legit I say definitely go for it. . . I personally have no interest in numismatic silver bars. 1oz branded bars seem to go for a premium as well. They are selling on feebay right now for 50+++
Soooo... Is it just me or is a chart of US debt looking dangerously parabolic?

I would have kept the 4 oz bar. The last 4 oz Engelhard I saw sold for $20/oz OVER spot
And they certainly aren't making any more...

"Odd" sized bars, especially Engelhard, tend to almost always sell for a premium.

a 5th 1-oz bar is worth over $40, so it sounds like he made a good trade unless you meant $20/per oz over spot.
btw, they are not making anymore Englehardt 1 oz bars either.

Well I dont think you made a bad deal even if you could of gotten more out of the premium on it. 25 percent more silver is a great deal. If the guy hadnt wanted to trade, you might never have realized you even had a premium bar anyway. and premiums often decline on certain things as price rises. so there might of been a window for a better deal, but you did good imo.

I did mean $20 PER OUNCE over spot, which is why I said "$20/oz OVER spot"
That would be $80 over spot, or roughly two ounces of silver. I don't think Engelhard has minted any silver bars since the late 80s, and these odd-sized poured bars are even older.
