So... Um... Silver?!?!

Postby timmus0382 » Thu Apr 14, 2011 5:15 pm

So I figured I'd take a crack at buying my first lot of loose halves and rolls today. I hit up 8 different banks and some had rolls and some had loose. I was really happy and really mad. Here is why.

So my first bank had CWR's and I pulled a few 40% and 1 90% from 3 rolls that was great!

Then I hit a few more banks and grabbed a few more CWR's and some loose and got some 40% and a couple 90%

I was now on a roll and high as a kite!

The last bank the teller really made me mad. She had her little tray there and I saw a few silver sides and got excited. I asked her if I could take a withdrawal from my savings account and get the money in halves. She said sure. She then proceeded to count out the halves and put the silver ones aside right in front of me!!!! She then said ok I have 7 dollars I can give you. I said what about those other ones? She said "well those have silver in them and we are not allowed to give them out."

Ummmmmm REALLY!?!? Is this true? Anyone else ever have that happen to them? She basically jipped me out of 3 silver halves? Do some banks have protocols for keeping silver halves? Do they sell them and have a pizza party or something?

Here are my results
4 - 1964 90%
1 - 1966 40%
1 - 1967 40%
2 - 1968 40%
1 - 1969 40%

If its in the tray, they are the banks. If you didn't care about making her/them mad you could have asked for the manager. Some banks won't sell loose change if you are not a member. I think some just make up their own rules.

Yeah, the coins are the banks to do with as they see fit. I can imagine the frustration though of seeing them right in front of you! I'd be upset too.

I actually understand why they would hold them back and surprised that there are tellers that don't know to do it. I would think it would be common courtesy though to not pull them right in front of you! Sounds like you still had a pretty good day.

I've never heard of a bank having that policy. It's likely what she said could be translated as follows "I'm not allowed to give them out to you because they are going home with me". Realistically the bank is not under any obligation to give you any specific coin or bill, for example if you were someone who played "poker" with serial numbers on bills they are under no obligation to let you pick and chose what bills you want. Any teller that knows what silver is worth is unlikely to give it to you. My little island girl brings home any silver that comes into the bank, whether it comes in thru her window or one of the other clueless tellers accepts it. She has them all trained to bring it to her. :D
If you are waiting for the "correction" to buy you need to realize that the increasing prices ARE the correction.

Yeah, Joe's got it right. The bank is ALLOWED to give you any coin or bill it wishes...it's not OBLIGATED to do so, however. This girl knew their value and the halves are now home with her, guaranteed! "Not allowed to give them out"??? My BSometer spiked when I read it

I only asked for halves once, back in Feb. The teller, who has been great about handing over String boxes of cents said, "We have a bag of loose ones in the vault," then added matter-of-factly, "but I haven't had the chance to pull the silver ones out yet. Do you want them after I do?"

.
there is one bank here that the girls have learned the sound of silver, and they all collect.
when you deposit anything silver and it hits the counter they all scream that is mine.
they actually all leave the customer they are waiting on to see what was silver.
a bunch of silverbeaches, as someone on here said, I don`t know who.

I think I got the Halves bug. I must try not to go back again... I probably wont ever have a day that good again. I only bought $158 worth and pulled out all those. I have seen posts on this site of people sorting $500 box and only getting a couple.

I searched $4500 (9 boxes) and found zero 90% and zero 40%. I gave up halves and quarters (also 100% unsuccessful) and only check dimes occasionally.

I figure she works there, why begrudge her a little silver? She more than likely knew they were worth something, she has bills to pay, wants and needs just like you.

She didn't "jip" you out of nothing. You don't have the right to every silver half in the bank.

Looks like you got about 100 dollars of silver for some leg work, be happy.

Whether it swims in a river, lake or the ocean, has that perfect ring when it hits the counter or that unforgettable woman you met in college, we all have stories and memories of the ones that got away.

Sad but true. There's a lesson embedded in each one of those scenarios............although I'd be hard pressed to tell you how to increase your odds in any of those situations.

I think the criticism is misplaced here...had the girl simply said, "I collect the silver halves as well", he would've respected that. Instead, she used a (terrible) cop out and basically lied to his face. Nowhere did he say he had a right to all the silver in the bank.

This is akin, in my mind, to food producers who use shady tactics like filling the chip bag with 20% more air and charging the same price (or higher). That's insulting! I'd rather that they just be straight with me and charge me more for the same amount of chips as opposed to pulling crap like that.

I had a teller girl who gave me a "64 kennedy and told me she collects the silver ones as well, but she knew I drove a good distance and wanted to be nice. That made me respect her immensely...

If what you say is indeed the case, she still lied...only this time at the behest of her manager.

The truth would have been..."I'd give you the silver halves, but my manager told us to save them out for him/her." Again, a straight answer worthy of respect.

I dunno, If her manager did instruct them not to give out silver isnt...

<<<She said "well those have silver in them and we are not allowed to give them out.">>>

this exactly what the teller would say if they were to lazy to have all ready taken out the silver halves? atleast the girl could count. the tellers at the banks around here are a bit on the dull side....
