Grew up hunting, fishing and gardening. Could be self sufficient in food with little warning. Never thought much of these skills until I realized that most of my friends don't have them.

i would rather have no class for the class than what happened to my family that weekend. every time i try to make time to learn a trade something happens. usually it's lack of cash. well this time my aunt's house burned down. my older aunt living with her died from the burns sustained in the fire. it was a long month, december. she died dec 2 and was finally put to rest dec 22. that day the heavens were opened up and weeping heavily! my aunt was 87 years old.

however, it was completely avoidable! the caretakers did not follow thru in making sure my aunt did not do something silly like sit on the bed with something lit!

I was at the library the other day and saw books on both candlemaking and soapmaking. Maybe a trip there will help learn the trades.

Check out the book "Dick's Encyclopedia of Practical Receipts and Processes: Or How They Did It in the 1870's" - a lot of very interesting content explaining how people did everything from candlemaking to woodworking to food preparation before the advent of modern technology.

Moneydog, thats a funny sight. Planting cow seed in the dirt and watching the little calves shoot up towards the sun. I think you mean cattle ranching. I guess the skills I am learning is how to smelt PMs and can vegetables.

I have hooked up a Harbor Freight solar panel kit for backup electricity, plan on getting one more when I have the money so I am learning about electricity. I also bought a second hand tiller for $25 and repaired it for about $80 giving me a means of working my spring garden so I can add to my food supply. Repairing it also saved me about $300 since I won't have to buy a new one. Next project is learning how to dehydrate and can food.

Just curious, Rob, how much wattage in solar panels do you have? How much wattage would it take to run a furnace?

By the way, if you need help with food dehydration, just lemme know. I've done a little bit of dehydration myself. Too bad I haven't had time recently to give my 10 Nesco dehydrators much of a workout! :mrgreen:

i am no expert, and i don't do any meats, but i have an excalibur dehydrator, I asked for it one year from my mom for my birthday, had it now probably close to 10 years, still a champ of a machine. It is always on sale, I think it was $229.00 ten years ago, lol.

This isn't necessarily a skill - but somewhat of a good idea to practice.

I regularly fill the gas tank in my truck several times a week. I try to never let my truck go below 3/4 of a tank of gas.

This way, if you ever have to bug out of town, you're ready to go on a moments notice. Throw a few additional gas cans along with your BOB in the bed and go.

Obviously assuming that you would even be able to drive on the roads etc etc..

Anyway - its better to be prepared. If shtf, gas stations will be dry within a day.
