Discussions about scrap yards, scrap yard prices, melting, refining, and obtaining metals from scrap or unconventional sources.

So my biggest concern with the scrapping I have done over the years is the time spent for the return. But i was thinking, why don't i host a recycling event? Have people bring me their stuff and then sell it for scrap! then I wouldn't have to do the searching, hualing, and storing. I would just put up signs and ad's on Criags List and set a rented flat bed trailer out. Then the next day drive the trailer to the scrap dealer!
People who don't know about scrapping would think this is a great way to get rid of stuff without paying the city or county to pick it up!
What do you guys think?

If you are in an area that doesn't have regular services for that, it could work.
But you will have to staff the site to keep out the unwanted items.
Otherwise you'll get a lot of tires, console TVs, mattresses, etc.

I think it's a good idea. You could staff it and charge for disposal of the TV's, tires and funiture.

Where I am, if you did this on your own property it would become a 24-7 dumping ground after the first "event".
Pickups are better because you go to the source and avoid the hassles of people illegally dumping their trash on your property in the middle of the night. You also get access to other material and items that the owner(s) may have forgotten they had - many of my best finds and purchases have been made after I went to someone's business or residence for a different reason.
Running such an event is also going to violate local regulations in many cities and towns.
A better tactic is to just hang out in front of your local dump/waste facility and intercept people before they enter, offering to lighten their load or buy items before they throw them out. This skirts around most rules against scavenging, saves people in town money and also drums up more business (hand out your business cards).

I have thought about this as well. The dump charges you an extra fee of $10 if not covered so I was goind to sell cheep tarps and then see what else I could get before it made it to the dump!
