Nope. I'm actually talking about dumping US Nickels (and I'm not trying to reopen the debate about whether they're worth stacking or not).

OK, avoiding the debate then...why not just dump them where you dump your zincs?

Where are you located. . . I'll buy em. Just dump them in any free coin counter or re-roll em in boxes. I honestly havnt given a bank a nickel in probably 7 years, but i see no reason why it would be a problem.

The biggest issue with dumping is potential for fees, efficiency, and time spent. So hey, wouldn't the best bet be to find someone relatively local who hoards nickels, and just do an even dollar-for-dollar exchange? They get extra nickels, and you don't have to spend your time dumping

They sometimes don't like it too much if you dump several boxes at a time. Every bank has limited vault space and the coins they move the most to their merchants are quarters and pennies. So you just spread your dumps around a little.

I figure to dump the nickels the same way I dumped state quarters, when the time comes that I can gain more out of anothetr metal (say silver0 than what I may anticipate getting out of the nickel, I will dump, and when I do, I will just go to my local bank. granted they may not want it all, but let's face it, they already get so much from businesses and the like, am I really going to take up that much more space in a vault?

I have 5 CU branches I dump in. Each branch gets a one gallon bucket of coin. This keeps the line moving and allows me a route that takes me by several banks to ask for more coin.

That's the way I do it.. Dump, pickup - dump, pickup.. Sometimes on Saturday if I feel like quite time I drive and just dump. Although it's a waste of gas so I normally don't do it that way.

Do you still have them in original rolls/bank boxes? I'd assume it'd be much easier to dump them if they were packed like that.

just roll em up in your automatic coin rolling machine and the banks don't usually have a problem unless you are trying to dump huge quantities at a single branch.

A week ago I was at my bank dumping some zincs and the fellow in front of me was tearing open cwr of all sorts. I noticed that he was duming nickles and dimes. I asked if you mind selling me the cwrs and he said that he would like to but he didn't want to take the responsbility of undercounted rolls, as he found them in a building he manages and had to clean out the space and found them.

I told him that I would take the risk and the rolls looked old. He finally sold me some. In the nickles I found a lot of coins from the 40's and a couple of pre-64's in the dimes. I'm glad that I took the risk. The dimes I don't want will be dumped but all the nickels are going to be kept.

The people behind me were amused that I was taking his rolls without question. So what if the count could have been one or two short (which they weren't) the outcome was great.

This is the same day that my wife found some mint wrapped state quarters in her coind order from her bank. Some times the gods do smile on the unwitting.

edit: When I get nickels I usually just set them aside and have a hard time getting around to searching them though. Is there reall anything special that I should be looking for when I search the 20 boxes that I have. I do plan on adding to my stash.

I look for:
(1) war nickels (obviously) - 1942,1943,1944,1945 look closely at 1942 it must have a P,S or D above the dome on reverse
(2) 1939d and 1950d - low mintages 3.5 million and 2.6 million respectively
(3) 1938s, 1939s and 1942s - relatively low mintages -around 15-18 million
(4) 2009 any mint- about 18 million minted
(5) 1981 and older Canadien nickels - these are all .999 nickel and are well worth keeping. Worth about 9.6 cents each.
(6) Buffaloes and V nickels (or Liberty nickels as some would refer to them)
(7)Proof nickels. I've only found a couple

Anything else goes back to the bank. Others on this site keep Pre 1960, some keep them all. This is just how I do it.
