Found a 1984 DDO

Postby appjoe » Wed May 11, 2011 9:23 pm

I found this in a $25 Brinks box.
Better picture than this one listed below
As soon as I found it I put it in a 2x2 so I wouldn't lose it, so the scan is with it in the 2x2. It has the double ear, chin and bowtie.

It was your post on the WAM's that really got me searching for varieties. I thought I would never find any but when you posted your finds I thought I would try.
Thank again

I think I will let the Ryedale take a break for a little while and get back in the error game. Finds like your coin here is what makes coin sorting FUN. Thanks Joe for the re-insperation :)

I don't know Jack about mint errors.

But why is the rim beveled?

It looks funny.

The rim is not beveled. The coin was scanned in a 2x2. I guess the plastic makes it look that way. When I get a chance I'll rescan it out of the 2x2.

Here is a scan out of 2x2. I see the scanner casts a shadow but it's better than in the 2x2. You can see the double ear, chin and bowtie better.

I found a strange 84 tonight after being inspired by your find. Out of $25 String box..1 1984 caught my eye...is there another 84 double die. This one has the bottom of the lobe doubled straight down...about 1/4 of the size of your double die. Battery is dead on my camera...but I compared this one to at least 25 other 1984's and none have this. Maybe a new discovery?

I think I know what your talking about. I found a few of those and was always wondering if it was the DDO until I found this one. I was never able to find the one your talking about under errors. I found a few of those checking for the 1997 double ear. It looks like just the bottom round part of the lobe is doubled downward. It maybe a new discovery. Here is a link to check out. http://www.coppercoins.com/index.php on the left side click on die varieties then type in the year your looking for.

After getting it home and under better lighting conditions...I found the coin to have machine doubling...the letters in LIBERTY, his nose all the way to his bowtie, his lips and between his lips. I took a picture with my good camera and I blew it up and you can see the little doubling of the bottom of the earlobe...but the other stuff I mentioned was clear as day...can't believe I missed it. I'll post the pictures if you want to see it. Just a pain in my a s s to resize the pics!
