Morgan question

Postby GA-Silver » Sat Jun 04, 2011 4:33 pm

I bought a Morgan dollar off a buddy today and I have a question about it. It is a common date (1900). It has rim damage to it, so its hard to make out the mint mark, but its probably a "O". The question I have is that is is really dark in color, dark gray. It won't stick to a magnet, but it doesn't have the silver "ring" to it when its dropped. The discoloration will not clean off with hot water and baking soda.
Is there another way to check if its real silver? Is this a low quailty fake?

I can't ever get pics to load up on this board...sorry. As far as weighing it, since the coin has rim damage, so that might nulify affect the true weight of the coins(??)..
I did scratch the coin in a small area that reveiled silver metal. I am wondering if some idiot painted the coin.......

I bought some really dark morgans in the past that turned out to be fake. Even with rim damage it should be really close to a normal weight silver morgan. Most fakes (esp this common one) dont bother to hit weights closely. You should be able to polish a silver morgan quite easily as well.

Also fake morgans tend to show a fair amount of detail but the detail is fuzzy. They tend to be stuck profoundly yet with poor details.

By filing it you should see a silver-white metal- either silver if its real or lead/zinc if its fake so that test is moot.

Will your friend return your money? Will you have to take it out of his hide?

I'll ask him. He already refunded my money. What would you give for it?
