This is the greatest site on the internet. No joke. Hands down the best ever. This community is either way off-kilter, or gone deeply down the rabbit hole, or perhaps very advanced in a way few can perceive.
Simply put, I am fascinated by people such as highroller4321 and anybody else who has accumulated as many or more pennies, and I have to ask, if it is not too personal, a few questions about you folks.

First, I am assuming you serious types are already very wealthy in order to tie up $200,000+ in pennies. So what is driving you? If you are already successful monetarily, and presumably living a wonderful and fulfilling life, why do you pursue such marginal returns in this manner? Could you not beat these penny returns with stock trading, or futures trading, or small business or something other than pennies? I imagine you did something similar prior to penny sorting in order to get rich in the first place. Perhaps you were a doctor or lawyer or computer entrepreneur.

Second, what is your end game? The storage must be an issue. Do you want --=ALL THE COPPER PENNIES=--?!

Third, are you going for outrageous notoriety along the lines of performance art? The monetary gains seem too small to be the driving factor when time and effort are taken into consideration.

Thanks for the answers, and again I just want to let everybody know, from the $100 starters to the counted-by-the-ton fiends, you folks are all amazing and have put together one seriously amazing web forum.

And to think I sold him his first Ryedale.

It's all about the margins, baby!

How many stocks do you know of that have absolutely no downside?

The reasons I sort.

1. It's entertaining, I turn on Alex Jones radio, and go to it. So it's a learning experience.
2. It's a way for me to make a little extra money while I look for a job, or while I have a job.
3. I see a future where the melt ban is lifted, and it being impossible to get my hands on boxes of pennies to sort anymore.
4. I also see a future where our Fiat currency is so inflated that it costs $20 for a loaf of bread.
5. It's a great way to meet like minded people!

You know what happens when you assume... For some folks this isn't a just a personal investment, it's a legitimate business.

Insane-O wrote:Second, what is your end game? The storage must be an issue. Do you want --=ALL THE COPPER PENNIES=--?!

Look at the link in highroller's signature, that should answer some of your questions. Part of his business is storage. http://www.portlandmint.com

Considering very few here publicly post their identity, and most actually take steps to preserve privacy like using a PO box for delivery, I have a hard time understanding why you think anybody is in this for publicity. Advertising for a business perhaps, but not for personal recognition. Identifying yourself and then bragging about valuable tangible assets seems like a bad idea.

From a financial standpoint.. probably one of the riskiest investments you could make. If things go south.. not only is your investment shot.. but you are out of a job too.

I imagine that right now, you're feeling a bit like Alice. Hmm? Tumbling down the rabbit hole? Have you ever had a dream, Insane-O, that you were so sure was real? What if you were unable to wake from that dream? How would you know the difference between the dream world and the real world? This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the fiat currency - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the real money - you stay in Wonderland and we show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.
"If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their Fathers conquered....The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs."

Well not if you sell it right after you buy it. Sure you pay short-term capital gain tax but the way mine is set up you get one heck of a return. The stock I bought (Halliburton) has given me a 82% return so I'm not complaining right now. Of course this is only a short term strategy, I dare not hold this more than a year or two. Speaking of the company going under, My brother's mother-in-law lost 800k in Enron Stock when it went under but.... She still has her job :) That makes it all better

I wonder what would happen if the US minted a $10 FV coin that had an intrinsic value of $24.92. . . Do you think Insane-O would hold onto those?

:geek:. Insane. O, seems like your playing devils advocate. The investments here are a mere hobby for some, and a profitable hedge against the hyperinflation/currency devaluation for others, coming soon to a working class family near you. Have you listened to the lame stream propaganda machine in reference to the economic conditions. Only a few will make/take profits from wall street. The working class will wonder why their life savings disapeared! Pension plans, social security, 401k, etc stolen. Please do not patronize the intelligent people that can forsee this casino style monopoly unfolding before our own eyes. The masses of citizens have injested the flouride flavored kool aid for far to long.

Yeah I really liked that one, last year in my home state (NC) they passed legislation that mirrors the police state take over. Gives the governor full power in a state of emergency. Guess who states the state of emergency? The GOVERNOR! I should look at that bill again, and post some of it in a thread on here.

Hahaha... I was a little slow and was thinking of Liberty dollars, not what you were referring to.

Now, what if that $10 coin was made of COPPER! That would be one awesome coin!!!

I don't think we should get upset at Insane-O's questions. It's similar to someone asking a person that owns hundreds of guns, "Why do you have them all?" From the vantage point of an outsider looking in, people that hoard a few pounds of copper pennies might seem a little strange, but individuals that do it on a massive scale might seem ludicrous. It's not a sin to be uninformed. It's only an opportunity to bring another into the right frame of mind.

I'm actually planning on buying a 2012 Camaro Z28 and paying cash(all in pennies) for it when they finally release it

I think it will capture nationwide attention to pennies and give the dealer huge free publicity
. of course I have no Idea how they are going to transport 5 million pennies lol but they'll figure it out!!

Yes, yes. I like this. But for 50K I might go for something different than a Camaro.

I like it misteroman! They will think you have been saving up your pennies for quite a while to buy that car.

I love when I take in 4 bags of zinc to cash in for lunch money and folks say "Wow.. how long did it take you to save up all those pennies?" I answer "A few hours."

Whenever I am asked that question, I just say "it took a while" I like the few hours answer better. I will try that next time.

Such as? This isn't the regular Camaro or even the SS. They are supposed to be limited and will have the ZR1/CTS-V engine and will have at LEAST 570HP :o
Will only see limited road time and will be parked next to my 86 Iroc-Z that I had in High school. Both cars will be red/ black stripes.
