Nice bank find. . . .what to do?

Nice bank find. . . .what to do?

Postby theo » Sat Jun 04, 2011 1:30 pm

I had a good day at the bank today. They had 5 rolls of halves for me which were all marked "1966" or "1967." All but three halves (97) were 40% silver giving me a little over 14 ounces of silver for $50.

Anyway, I'm not a huge fan of the 40% halves, but I wanted to know what you guys think. Should I try to exchange them for 90% silver, .999 silver or some gold, or should I just keep them for diversity's sake (about 4% of my stack is 40% halves).

Thanks

I second the motion...

Nothing wrong with 40%ers. I can remember when no one wanted them at $40 per roll right here on RealCent. Yes, they are not as nice as 90%, but they will hold their value (while at a discount) as SILVER rises. I would not be surprised if at $100 SILVER, when 90% halves go for $35 each, that the 40%ers would be the cheap economical choice that the average Joe could afford. Presently, Tulving is paying spot-$2 for 40%ers, while he is only paying spot-$1.20 for 90% coins. So, I say SILVER in a cheap economical coin is good SILVER too.

When I have 40%, I always attempt to trade up to .90 or .999

1st off... Nice find! I scored two solid rolls last week myself of 40%ers. However, I'm with Country on this one. I'm waiting for that $100 mark when I think that I can get my melt value for them. Right now... since silver has cooled off a bit... I don't think you'd be able to realize thier melt value out of selling them. I'm holding mine! I mean... what the hay... we paid FACE for them! I'm NOT at a loss... and I can afford to "be wrong" on my theory. If I am wrong... then I should still be able to sell them for about the same ratio to their melt value that they go for now and I can "trade up" to gold or .999 or 90% or whatever then and it would be the same as if I did that now.

Another vote for hold for now. I think gold will go up and take silver with it.
Patience until then. When silver has demand fever again, then it's time to upgrade.
We have to wait out the aftermath of bloody sunday.
Unless you don't mind taking the hit or get lucky.
Put them up for sale here and see what happens.

Might be the perfect thing for someone's budget.

I thought there was a post where some members were saying that as the price of silver goes up 40% silver will be harder to get rid of.

The reason I thought they said was the refiners would be backlogged and it is more time intensive to scrap the lower percent silver

I could be wrong though

Thanks for the advice guys. About 40% of them have fairly shiny clean faces and almost all of the rest are in decent condition. I might be able to work a trade with a local dealer for a 1/10 gold coin and perhaps an ASE. I might check with another coin shop today. I was thinking about trading two rolls now and holding the rest for later.

People are really feeling the effects of this depression. these coins are coming out of the woodwork (grandma stash) and into circulation. I feel like a scavenger! How ignorant are people throwing away what is going to the moon! God help them!

I see it's your first post--welcome to Realcent!

There are certainly more people getting into CRH these days, but what we still have in our favor is that all across the country there are millions and millions of old silver coins sitting in stashes. And for every one of us out there searching for them, there are a hundred people (maybe more) who will put them right back into circulation for us to find without giving it a second thought
