2005 Gold and Silver Prices (End of Year)

Postby Know Common Cents » Sat Jul 02, 2011 11:20 am

Stuck in the back of a desk drawer in my office was the December 23, 2005, Coin Dealer Newsletter. It's always interesting (and usually sad) to look back in time and figure out what we could-should-would have done to better our position in mid-2011.

The prices listed for the quantities below are CDN Bid prices based on $503.60 gold and $8.57 silver:

US 90% circ bags $5900
US 40% circ bags 2350
Silver Dollar bags (AG/G) 7000
Warnix bags 1550
Canadian 80% bags 4575

American 1 oz gold eagle 513.20
French 20 granc gold 97.00
English Sov (old) 120.10

MS 63 $20 Saint Gaud 670.00

Morgan Dollar sets 1878 to 1921 (VG or better) $6250 No 1895 proof included

Where's my time machine when I need it? There's a couple of viewpoints that can be used here. One is that these prices are in the past and we're just stuck with the 2011 levels. Another is that the prices from late 2005 to July 2011 are just part of a rising trend and that current prices will be a real bargain almost 6 years from now. Whichever one you support, it's certainly interesting to look back in time.

On the last thoughts, hindsight is always 20/20. It requires a check of convictions as to what you really believe to take action going forward. There can be no absolute guarantees (we don't even know if we are going be here tomorrow). But ask yourself what makes the most sense? Weigh all the evidence, and put the bulk of your resources where that evidence tells you to go.

If you believe we have a sound economy, with strong industry, a solid banking system, sound money, and good financial base, with people in elected government who understand fiscal responsibilty and moral authority - then you do one thing.

If you think differently, then you bet on something else. I'm betting on the something else.

A year and a week ago I went thru Lubbock TX on the way to a wedding and stopped at a gun show. A guy near the front of the show room was dealing in silver and had just bought a load of Morgans and Peace dollars, selling them at a modest profit. I used my gun money to buy several dozen Peace dollars at $16.50 each. Not 2005 prices but still comparatively cheap.

And I remember 3 dollar silver and thought that 5 dollars per ounce was to much.

Oh, the stories we could all tell. One that sticks out in my mind was from the late 1980s. A dealer I had bought a bunch of gold pieces from had several rolls of this new American Eagle coin. He kept telling me to buy some, and I said "who would ever buy such a thing? Its not a real coin, and well, there's no age on it." Long story short, he couldn't sell them either. So we made a deal, I could have a big discount on the Gaudens $20 coins if I would buy the 150 Silver Eagles he had an inventory. He offered them to me at $9 a piece, which I thought was the biggest rip-off ever, as I could buy common Morgans for 7-8 at the time. So, we settled on $8.50 a piece. For 15 years I felt that his was my worst coin purchase ever, and I never once looked at those stupid things. In the end I was wrong.

LOL! I remember thinking I was in for a rip-off if I bought at those prices!

The dealer probably has a memory of this event which differs from yours  Inflation is a strange chimera indeed, what wreaks ruinous nightmare with some leads to fruition of dreams for others. :o

In retrospect... at the time... it ALWAYS felt like I paid too much. But I always felt like if I really wanted the item, then I had to be willing to make a sacrifice to obtain it... and the years have made those decisions seem wise. I remember way overbidding to buy five ounces of gold 1/4 ounce fractionals at $400 an ounce... when gold was only $386!
