Craigslist find - 1903 Morgan

Postby NHsorter » Sat Jul 09, 2011 9:39 am

I was pretty happy with the condition of this coin. I was reluctant to drive a half hour to get it because I figured the gas would eat up any savings, but I really can't complain getting this for $25. I don't know the first thing about grading, anyone have an idea what condition is on this?

Very Nice+ (that's my unofficial grade)

The Doctor will be along shortly with a more informed opinion.

Seems that everyone in my craigslist zone is expecting to get ebay prices. Have yet to score anything noteworthy.

Nice purchase... It looks to be low-end AU, and possibly cleaned, as I cannot see mint luster from the photos. If it is not cleaned, then its about a $50 coin. Buyers might point out the minor rim ding at 4:00, but I would be looking at the odd missing details in the rim at 9:30 and 3:30... and the hair detail above the eye seems to be lacking as well. At first glance, I initially thought it was fake, but I would need the coin in hand to verify that.

Thanks for the feedback on the coin.

Yeah, I hear you on the eBay price thing. Same sort of thing up here, the deals are few and far between. It's hard to get through to a lot of people and explain all of the fees that they would have to pay in order to obtain that eBay audience and get that eBay premium. What really annoys me is when people think that something with a BuyItNow price means that is what the coin is worth and that is what they expect to get.

Yeah, that rim ding at 4:00 is a bummer. I think the other stuff that you are seeing is just the way the scanner light hit it or something. Thanks for the opinions. The size weight and sound indicate to me that it is not a fake, but I am still a rookie.

With morgans, 70-85% of the grade comes from the obverse. On the obverse their are different parts that have different influences on the grade. The cheek and chin of the face are the most important and they are in great shape on your coin. I recommend a book called "making the grade". It's a visual guide for the 50 most popular coins. On the morgan they have 18 pictures of the coin going from G-4 to MS-67 and 16 grades in between. All you have to do is match your coin up to the pic that reflects the condition of your coin.

I recently bought a 1903o morgan. MS-64. I just sent it, along with some other coins to ANACS for grading. With the 1903o morgan and one other coin I am attempting to do a "crossover". The coin was graded by NGC and is in their holder. I have entered a minimum acceptable grade of MS-65 in the hopes that they will allow it to "crossover" to ANACS. If successful It will gain $200 in value. Its a long shot but I like to gamble.

I think you guys are right and it has been cleaned. Oh well, if is was a 1903 O and it was cleaned then I would be upset, but getting this for $25 I am still happy and it'll go in the keeper pile.

Make sure to weigh it to help confirm it's not a fake.

At 25 bucks, you can hit it with a hammer and be OK.
