when picking out varieties, dont focus on idealism. Like organic seed or other non sense. these are seeds, how YOU grow it will determine the foods quality, and if you learn to save seed the next years seed will be as you desire anyway...

Rather take some time and pick varieties best acclimated to your locale. Better yet pick several varieties acclimated to your locale, and even consider doing some "light" breeding work, or simply grow them together as one variety so you get your own landrace going. Over time youll naturally select out the genetics best acclimated to your locale and methods....

Thanks for the list!

My mother was thinking about hoarding some seeds and she sent me a link to this site. Do you have any experience with them? Are they overpriced? There is so much info out there and I just don't know where to start or what to believe.

They are horrendously over priced. like drop your jaw over priced.

Also there is NOTHING wrong with hybrids. what a hybrid is, is the first year cross of two other varieties.. You can save seeds just fine. What IS true is that they will not breed true to type. this is GOOD. what this means is the frst year you plant them if its a variety that does well in your area, youll get a good crop. the next year youll have some poorer plants and some that are BETTER. Save those seeds from the better plants... Over time youll have plants naturally acclimated to your exact conditions in a such a way that picking the likely best varieties out of a garden catalog will never give you!!!!

Also its not hard at all to preserve seed for long term storage.... You dont need their fancy looking bucket. You could go as simple as oxygen absorbers in mason jars. Real cheap and easy for anyone to do. but most types will last years just cool and dry. Or decades in an AIRTIGHT container in a freezer. If you saved them yourself simply ensure they are dry before any long term storage and your golden.

I suspected that they were overpriced. Thank you for confirming that. I'll pass this info on and hopefully save my Mom a few bucks. You are a wealth of information! Thanks for taking the time to reply and thanks for spreading around all this great info to us that you have taken the time to accumulate & learn.

A point I argued many a time, then just gave up on.

My credibility was a bit low as I'm not a very good gardener, but it's so obvious. I thought.

youd be surprised mossy. Ive been on tons of gardening forums over the years... Even many of the seed savers just dont get it. they get all caught up into "pure" "heirlooms".... Heck try looking up the definition for an heirloom variety. Youll find maybe 5 different ones and none official.

Open pollinated seeds (ones that breed true) are great. but nothing wrong with hybrids at all. In fact doing some breeding is something I wish more gardeners would do, and you can do it without much effort or skill in some cases. Especially if you start with hybrids. theres nothing unatural about hybrids either. Its simply how nature works.

now GM crops are another thing entirely. Many have proven unsafe. Also if you tried to save seed the inserted genes are unstable and readily mutate. As a gardener at this point you cant even buy them anyway, but who knows what would happen if you tried saving those seeds over a long period.

I know a few breeders...May have dabbled in some myself...

Nothing beats making your own hybrid and watching it thrive

Im looking to start growing my own hops (and maybe a few flavorful herbs), but Im far from an expert...Its a fun pastime for me though...And as soon as I have land to call my own, I plan to feed myself

Good thread. What is the best way to store seeds long term? Frozen? Dried with oxygen removers? Dried with oxygen removers and frozen? Any tips?
