Not impossible, but I asked someone about that. He said the hatch covers were probably wood. Come to think of it, the hatch covers on the freighters I worked on back in the 60's were wood with heavy canvas tarps over them. So, they would rot/float away.

Thanks for the info, Mossy. Weird. You would think they would have used steel instead. Makes you wonder how many men have died at sea just because of weak hatch covers.

More than a few. But, now I'm remembering back, those covers were made of 3" to 4" thick wood beams, set side by side. Maybe 6 or 8 inches wide. Pretty strong on the big freighters.

I cant stop thinking about that hoard of silver at the bottom of the sea...I can hardly wait till they get to the recovery phase and post pictures....I bet England was bringing back sacks and sacks of English colonial rupees....and those english versions of the trade dollar(what are the called)pulling hard assets out of the colonies to put towards protecting and financing the mother country....what do you guys think of buying Odessey stock? These guys have the green light from england to keep 80%!

It really depends on what they do with them. Are they collectables instead of bullion? Then it will not impact the spot price very much (IMHO). There was a discovery of a large vein of silver underneath the Great Wall of China a few years back. Millions of ozt's. That hasn't changed anything (yet).

That ship is about 3 miles under water. The process of bringing that thing up is no joke. Odessey is going to have major expenses not to mention what they have spent already. I would imagine the principles will take huge salaries, as they should. There may not be much left over for the stockholder.

It is very exciting though. and the recovery will be an awesome feat and a great story.
