Are George VI pennies hard to find?

Postby TwoAndAHalfCents » Tue Oct 04, 2011 12:48 am

I'm still pretty new at penny sorting but I recently passed the 50,000 coin mark and I still have not found a George VI Canadian penny. I have found a George V and an Indian, but no George VI. Aren't these supposed to be pretty common? Yesterday I even found a 1953 Elizabeth II - the first year for the new queen. But still no George VI.

I live near the canadian border so I find them fairly often. I would imagine it would be rare if you lived in a southern state. I still have not found an Indian Head after 200,000 cents searched by hand. So congrats on that.

ON EDIT: What year are the Gearge VI, maybe all of mine where George V.

George V 1920-1936
George VI 1937-1952

So to clarify... I live in Rochester, NY and find Geaorge VI fairly often, but I have never found a George V.

I've found one lonely George V in all these months. Scarcer than Indians, and I live in a fairly rich Canada cent region.

Find the George VI maybe 2 every $50 or so.

George VI are definitely not rare. Georve V's are rarer than Indians for me, but they are always in better condition than my IHC finds. Also other young queen cents you can often find them in AU and BU condition here in the states.

Sorry Willy13, you must be in an IHC free zone. I find 1 about every 50k searched. It may be a little less frequent now, but they are still out there.

Just keep searching and they will start turning up, last week i found 2. --> http://realcent.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=8846

I find several in each box I sort. The other day I found a 1932 in AU condition. I keep all my Canadian Cu separate from my US Cu.

I took a trip to Montreal with my Uncle and Grandmom back in 1973. I brought home a whole bunch of coins from that trip (including 2 silver dimes). I still have them today. My Uncle can't believe that I still have them.

They're fairly easy to find in Canada. On the other hand, wheaties are hard to find up here. I've been through nine boxes, and I've found less than thirty wheat cents - all common dates.
I did it. I've been crazy enough to sort through 10,000 rolls of pennies. Almost makes you think, "some people will do anything to build up a coin collection."

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I know I'm bound to find George VI pennies eventually. It just seems strange that I've gone this long without one. But I shouldn't be surprised with only 2 to 3 Canadians per box here in Southern California. That's not even close to what you guys see further north.

With my lousy 0% average, I need to heed the advice of a wise man here on Realcent.org who says "If your percentages are low.. just sort more."

I think it would be cool if our Canadian members would post a thread that was a bit of a combination of the
"Copper Penny Hand Sorter Tracking"
and
"Pre-40 Lincoln Tracking Thread"
which would show the Canadian-side copper percentages and such, and also keep track of the different monarchs found...

I was thinking the same thing (actually, complaining about its lack :P )

Feel foolish now. Didn't realize this thread was going. I posted the question on if there was a collector market for George VI or just hoarded with Canadian CU.

Seems the closer you are to the border.. the more the crossings. I try to stop those invaders before they get any further south than northen CA. That is why you see such a paltry number of canucks. Even though the percentages of them are low here as well, I have managed to find quite a few Georges.. even a few of the old guy. Keep sorting.. maybe one will trickle down.

I still haven't found one since I started this thread. Maybe one of these days one will sneak past HCBTT and get into So Cal.

Interesting. I find more of them in the BWRs I get here than in actual circulation during my trips to Canada. Go figure.

I find one for every $100-$150 sorted. Haven't found any George V yet.

After sorting 75,000+ coins looking for the elusive George VI, I finally found one in a $25 Brinks box on Thursday. It was a 1946. That took way too long to find a coin that shouldn't be very hard to find. Then on Friday I found another one, a 1938 in $25 of CWRs  .
