$29.95 VG Peace dollar, good deal?

Postby surfcaster » Fri Oct 14, 2011 4:51 pm

Some time ago, I ordered a coin or 2 from Eastern Numismatics. They just sent me an email advertising $29.95 Peace Dollar, VG or better, unlimited quantity. Seems like a good deal?

I got that email. I was considering getting a couple. Just was wondering if it was worth it too.

yea that's a crappy deal. Got the same one. VG is a bad rating for coin collecting unless maybe it's a rare coin. On an average peace dollar most people don't care what the condition is if it's under VF or EF. It's generally worth it's melt with maybe a tiny bit more if you're willing to pay it.

I told my Father in law about this "Deal". He gave me $35.00, I'll give him one of mine for 35xFV. ;)

Melt is almost $25, i wouldn't spend a $10 premium on it.

No, it's not a good deal. Melt value at the time of this post is $24.60. Keep in mind that Morgan and Peace dollars will have higher premiums compared to dimes, quarters and halves.

Based on my experience you should be able to get average date Morgans and Peace dollars for around $3-5 above spot at your nearest coin store. Dealers generally charge more for the higher grades. 1921's are plentiful and usually have the lowest premiums, even in AU condition. The normal premium on slicks is low... maybe $1-2 dollars above spot.
