can you get into this hobby with a simple dremel and bits from walmart?
or are there more specialized metalworking tools?

I do most of my coin carving with hand push gravers, I use a Nikon microscope and a grs engraving vise..I,ve been carving coins about 15 years.I took a engraving class in Kansas about 7 years ago which greatly improved my coin carving skills...

Yes you can, I have seen some nice coin carvings done with a dremel. it,ll take some practice to get it looking good.
