Gold and High Face Values

Postby Robarons » Sat Nov 19, 2011 12:16 am

I was messing around on Currency Debasement (a great site!) and their gold section and found some interesting Gold coins.

Japan has a 100,000 Yen Gold coin made in 1986,1987 with .6430 AGW melting at $1100 dollars- but the face value is far higher!

Swiss had a 1000 Franc gold coins from 1984-1994 that melts at $1300 and a 500 Franc coin that melts at $650.

These coins would provide an excellent hedge in both fairly respected currencies as well in gold value. Not to mention some dealers may ignore the face values because 99% of gold coins are worth their gold weight and never their face value. Also Foreign gold is discounted in most cases.

Another interesting bonus is in situations where the face value is higher than gold value you can actually SPEND gold coins as currency. Talk about mind blowing- dropping a gold coin at Mcdonalds (100,000 yen coin sounds unlikely but a man can dream)

However it does not show pictures or tells how to obtain them but does anyone know anything about these coins? Also is there anymore gold coins you can add to this category?

I did some searching on Japanese websites and found the Japanese coin selling for 125,000 yen. I think about 1 million were made.
