How much is 'enough'?

Postby My2Cents » Sat Apr 14, 2012 10:35 pm

I have a personal goal of hoarding about 10,000 lbs of copper cents. There's no rhyme or reason to that particular number, just my goal. I figure that I have about 1,500 lbs put back thus far and with my Ryedale on its way, I'll be harvesting many many more pounds as the months wear on.

I'm sure many of you have your own goals. Some may want to just sell, so the poundage doesn't really matter... sort and sell a CTU may be your thing. I'm in it so my grandkids will open up all these buckets in about 40 years and say "HOLY SH!T".

What's YOUR poundage goal to put back?

One ton. I used to think that was a crazy goal since I'm just a small time hand sorter, but I've got a few hundred pounds. Slow but steady...

I bought most all of my hoard when I was working in the Middle East for 3 years. The money was good back then. Now that I'm in Okinawa, the money's ok, but I have access to a few banks and can sort my own until I get home in December. Then I'll be hitting the banks full time. Right now I'm hand sorting too, so it's a slow go.

One ton is an ambitious goal, but definitely acheiveable. What do you plan to do when you get your stash? Hide it somewhere? Cash it in when the price of copper hits $10/lb? Any long term goals with your hoard?

Myself...I have around 30 lbs of pennies and roughly 60 lbs of nickels. I don't have a scale, so it's hard to say. How much is enough? I don't know. The hoard will continue to grow until further notice....

I wish that I had this much silver!

When I first started sorting about 3 years ago, my goal was 10,000 copper pennies; then it was 100,000. When reached that after about a year, I decided to shoot for a ton (306,000), which I made about a month ago; all through hand sorting. Honestly, I'm pretty surprised it has lasted this long. I'm not sure where to go from here as I'm working out some storage issues. I suppose I'll keep going as long as it makes financial sense to do so.

I think it'll take the well running dry for me to get my 10,000 lbs. Lately I've been getting about 5-7 copper cents per roll. At that rate, it'll take me years.

Until they won't let me withdraw any more pennies from the bank.

Which seems to be about six months :(

My goal is generally to do one 5-gal bucket (@ 200 lbs) per month, for as long as the government's policies keep the penny readily available :)

Looking at the potential profit down the road... and nobody really knows WHEN that will be.... but let's look at this scenario.

10 years from now, copper is sitting at $10/lb. Assuming you get the full value for your copper, here's how it looks....

2,000 lbs = $20,000
5,000 lbs = $50,000
10,000 lbs = $100,000

I guess I adopt the approach of 'Go BIG or go home'. But even if this pans out at $10/lb, you're not going to see that kind of money unless copper shoots higher.

But knowing my luck, once I drop that last penny into the bucket for a grand total of 10,000 pounds of copper, the gov will come out with an anti-hoarding law.

My goal for last year was one ton, it was a long time before I had it. I cannot believe I have 300,000 copper cents. In 2013, I will sort for another ton. Silver sorting is the theme of 2012. Have fun out there!! :)

ETA: 1,000,000 copper pennies does have a nice ring to it ;)

1 million copper cents used to be my goal, but i stopped at 30% of that, because i got worried i might move at some point and didn't want to have to move 3 tons of pennies.
