New to the Game!

Hi Everyone!

I've been lurking on these forums for a little while, and decided its time to say Hello! I am new to the hobby of collecting coins and sorting them. I have an interest in PM and Base Metal investing. Gotta say I've found alot of useful information on here! Anyway, I started my own little mini-hoard of Copper Pennies and Nickels. Began with $10 in pennies and 50 in nickels with plans on buying more every 2 weeks from my credit union. Purchased 10 lbs of Wheats from the Copper Cave website. So as I embark on this long term journey to amass my hoard, what kind of nickles should I be looking for? I've read some people suggest the ones from '09 and something about War Nickels. I'm looking for silver too. Thoughts? I hope to learn much more in the future! =) I do have a small collection of ASE's and Silver Proof collector sets from the US Mint. Good to see there are many other people who share my enthusiasm for such things....

Canadian nickels are where it's at, I have looked at copper caves prices and I'd recommend just sorting to save money. Hearing that a roll of American 09' d/p going for 18.00 a roll online.

Yes, the prices are a little expensive, but I did get 10lbs of Wheat Cents. However, I also have been sorting by hand and will continue to do so. I had good luck with last nights $25 penny box, found more than 30 percent coppers. I have 1.5 boxes of nickels to go through now. I will keep an eye out for more Canadian currency as well.

Sorted about $50 in Nickels tonight. I found 7 War Nickels! Not the biggest number, but it IS a start...and some free silver to boot! Should I try other denominations like Dimes, Quarters or Halves? I didn't find ANY 2009's so far....

7 war nicks in $50 is awesome! I mostly sort pennies right now. All my wheats have come from sorting. I'm only really saving them for copper so I'm considering selling off the wheats and turning that into more Cu cents or silver. Depends if you like them for bullion value or for numismatic. I'm not sure what will happen to the price of wheats when we get rid of the penny, so I have considered saving them to dump when they annouce the end of the penny.

welcome to the forum! I stack all the nickels I can get my hands on until they switch composition, and I still pick cents too. some people swear by the canadian .999 nickels, and I have started to stack those when i find a good deal at shows.

It turns out that some of those nickels were not silver after all. They were from the 1940s but no mint marks.

It turns out that some of those nickels were not silver after all. They were from the 1940s but no mint marks.

look for the MM's on the back of the coin. An easy way to sort for WTN's is to just flip all the coins so you can see the back side. Then just look for the p,d,s over the memorial.

look for the MM's on the back of the coin. An easy way to sort for WTN's is to just flip all the coins so you can see the back side. Then just look for the p,d,s over the memorial.

Yep, I know what to look for with the letters over the memorial. I do have some of my nickels sorted by decade, so if I miss anything the first time around, I can still go back and take another look. So far I've found 5 War nickels to date!

SilverDragon...welcome...keep your eye peeled for 1950D (approx) 2.6 million produced a lot of folks here have searched for years and not found any ...also 1939D (approx) 3.5 million produced...1942D type I (not the silver war nick) somewhere arond 16-18 million produced ( I dont hear much ever said about this one but, I keep an eye out for them). The best bullion nickel out there(IMO) is pre 1981 Canadien nickels. They are .999 nickel and are worth their weight at any scrap yard in the USA. Fill up a coin book of nickels , this has kept my interest up and can be sold for a small premium if you ever want.

Duly noted on the 1950D. I have some nickels from the 1950's kept separate from the others. I'll have to look at those more closely.
