I thought I remembered someone talking about people planting money in either a CS machine or the change return at a cash register for the holidays. I’m gonna be checking out a few of these closely.

After saying this I had to stop by my local CS machine. Found the following:

3 late date Jefferson nickels- none mutilated- not sure why they were in the change return.

Romania 5 bani coin

2 Canadian nickels- 1979 & 1981- the .999 nickel type!

You could say 2023 was a 50/50 year for Coinstar and ground hunting. I was at a great pace until my unplanned eye surgery in early August derailed things somewhat. The year was still a strong one though, almost on par with 2022 in many catagories. The real standout was finds in my apartment complex parking lot, which was not only a new record but represented almost 15% of the overall US total. One coin spill in particular just last week (51 pennies and a dime) was better than my best Coinstar haul. I don't know how much I'll hit the green machines next year but I hope it's enough to make interesting reading for you all.

December totals (2023 GRAND TOTALS)

1¢ - .83 (7.12)
5¢ - .10 (3.60)
10¢ - 1.10 (18.80)
25¢ - .25 (25.25)
50¢ - 0.00 (1.00)
Total - 2.28 (55.77)

Apartment complex parking lot
8.02 (new record!)

Canada

Quarter,dime, nickel, penny x 4

Mex,$2, $1 x 4

This machine has a magnet on the bottom edge of the intake . Trying to prevent them from getting in, rather than rejecting.
So I could see several that were hanging . The ones that I got, had to have been knocked off the magnet, or the volume of inputted coin was such that they were ,,,hidden,,or shielded from being captured.

Cold weather and car issues limited my searching this month but it didn't stop a brand new country from joining the all time ranks. I do want to hit as much as I can this month since Feb has historically had great results. And this year I hope to find my 500th different Coinstar foreign coin all time. Watch the running total at the bottom of my monthly posts. Which country will be #500?

January totals

1¢ - .32
5¢ - .15
10¢ - .60
25¢ - .75
Total - 1.82

Apartment complex parking lot: .19

Canada
10 cents (2018)

Costa Rica
10 colones (2012) <--77th country all time!

France
1 euro cent (2015)

Italy
10 euro cents (2021)

Tokens
Elephant Super Car Wash

2024 Countries (4)
Canada, Costa Rica, France, Italy

All time Coinstar foreign coin total: 446

I've noticed that, at one of the places I go to, it appears that the staff is cleaning out the reject bin. I was walking out of the store the other day and noticed nothing was in the CS chute. About 3 paces away from the CS, on a counter, was .06 in pennies, 1 looking like it would have been rejected by CS. I'm guessing there's competition there :)
